Prior to the release of Foo Fighters' 1995 debut album Foo Fighters, which featured Grohl as the only official member, Grohl recruited bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith, both formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as Nirvana touring guitarist Pat Smear. The band began with performances in Portland, Oregon. Goldsmith quit during the recording of their second album, The Colour and the Shape (1997); most of the drum parts were re-recorded by Grohl. Smear departed soon afterward but appeared as a guest with the band frequently from 2005; he rejoined in 2010.
Smear and Goldsmith were replaced by Franz Stahl and Taylor Hawkins; Stahl was fired before the recording of the group's third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose (1999). The band briefly continued as a trio until Chris Shiflett joined on guitar after the completion of There Is Nothing Left to Lose. Foo Fighters released their fourth album, One by One, in 2002. It was followed with the two-disc In Your Honor (2005), which was split between acoustic songs and heavier material. Foo Fighters released their sixth album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, in 2007.
For Foo Fighters' seventh studio album, Wasting Light (2011), produced by Butch Vig, Smear returned as a full member. Sonic Highways (2014) was released as the soundtrack to the television miniseries directed by Grohl. Concrete and Gold (2017) was the second Foo Fighters album to reach number one in the United States and their first studio album to feature longtime session and touring keyboardist Rami Jaffee as a full member. The band's tenth album, Medicine at Midnight (2021), was the last to feature Hawkins, who died in March 2022.
Produced by Greg Kurstin and Foo Fighters, "But Here We Are" (the band's 11th) would release on June 2nd, 2023.
On May 21, 2023, some days before the album's release, Foo Fighters would officially announce that Josh Freese would be the new drummer.
Over the course of their career, Foo Fighters have won 15 Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album five times, making them among the most successful rock acts in Grammy history. In 2021, the band was announced as recipients of the first-ever "Global Icon" award at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, their first year of eligibility.

I'm cold as a match, ready to strike
So, here I go
Here lies a city on fire
Singing along
The arsonist choir
Now, here I go
It's started with a spark
And burn into the dark
Now, here I go
There is a river I've found
Into the wild
Under the ground
So, here I go
A button on a string
And I heard everything
Now, here I go
Oh, sweet ignition be my fuse
You have no choice you have to choose
Bid farewell to yesterday
Say goodbye I'm on my way
But in the end we all
Come from what's come before
So, here I go
Oh, sweet ignition be my fuse
You have no choice you have to choose
Bid farewell to yesterday
Say goodbye I'm on my way
I threw it all away because
I had to be what never was
Been so hungry I could lie
Took my word, I took your wine
And held you in my bloody hands
These rattled bones and rubber bands
Washed them in the muddy water
Looking for a dime and found a quarter
But you can't make me change my name
They'll never make me change my name
Pay no mind now ain't that's something
Fuck it all I came from nothing
I'm something from nothing
You are my fuse
I'm something from nothing
You are my fuse
It goes oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
It goes oh, oh, oh
All rise
No you can't make me change my name
You'll never make me change my name
Pay no mind no wait that's something
Fuck it all I came from nothing
I'm something
From nothing
I'm something
From nothing
The song "Something From Nothing" by the Foo Fighters is about starting from nothing and creating something out of it. It begins with the lyrics "give me the flammable light, I'm cold as a match, ready to strike," which suggests a desire to ignite something new. The following lines compare this desire to start something to an arsonist choir, showing that the urge is not to create something peaceful, but rather to create a kind of chaos that will lead to something new.
The next verse speaks of finding a river "into the wild, under the ground." This could represent a new source of inspiration or motivation that the writer has discovered. The line "a button on a string, and I heard everything" suggests that even the smallest of things can lead to the biggest ideas.
In the chorus, the writer bids farewell to the past and embraces the future. They know they must leave behind everything that was, to make something new. The second verse speaks of sacrifice, of giving up everything to create something new, even if it means holding onto nothing.
Overall, "Something From Nothing" is a song about the creative process and the desire to make something new from nothing. It speaks to the power of inspiration, motivation, and the need to create something that is entirely your own.
