Black Holes and Revelations (2006) incorporated electronic and pop elements, displayed in singles such as "Supermassive Black Hole", and brought Muse wider international success. The Resistance (2009) and The 2nd Law (2012) explored themes of government oppression and civil uprising and cemented Muse as one of the world's major stadium acts. Rolling Stone stated the band possessed "stadium-crushing songs". Topping the US Billboard 200, their seventh album, Drones (2015), was a concept album about drone warfare and returned to a harder rock sound. Their eighth album, Simulation Theory (2018), prominently featured synthesisers and was influenced by science fiction and the simulation hypothesis. Their ninth album, Will of the People (2022), which combined many genres and themes from their previous albums, was released in August 2022.
Muse have won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, five MTV Europe Music Awards and eight NME Awards. In 2012 they received the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. As of June 2016, they have sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

Muse Lyrics

I tried to change the game
I tried to infiltrate, but now I'm losing
Men in cloaks always seem to run the show
Save me from the
Ghosts and shadows before they eat my soul
Mercy
Show me mercy, from the powers that be
Show me mercy, can someone rescue me?
Absent gods and silent tyranny
We're going under, hypnotized by another puppeteer
And tell me why the men in cloaks always have
To bring me down
Running from the
Ghosts and shadows the world just disavows
Mercy
Mercy
Show me mercy, from the powers that be
Show me mercy, can someone rescue me?
Show me mercy
Show me mercy, please
Help me, I've fallen on the inside
And all the men in cloaks trying to devour my soul
Show me mercy from the powers that be
Show me mercy from the gutless and mean
Show me mercy from the killing machines
Show me mercy, can someone rescue me?
The lyrics of Muse's song "Mercy" express a sense of desperation and fear of being controlled and overpowered by a higher force. The opening line, "Help me, I've fallen on the inside," suggests a feeling of internal turmoil and helplessness. The singer tried to change the game and infiltrate, but now finds themselves losing. The men in cloaks, who seem to run the show, are a metaphor for powerful entities that exert control over individuals and society.
The chorus of "Mercy" is a plea for help and liberation from these powers. The singer begs for mercy from the ghosts and shadows that threaten to consume their soul. The absence of gods and silent tyranny further emphasize the frustration and hopelessness of the situation. The reference to "hypnotized by another puppeteer" highlights the feeling of being controlled and manipulated. The song also questions why those in power always seem to bring the singer down.
Overall, "Mercy" is a cry for freedom and salvation from the oppressive forces that dominate the singer's life.
