Waiting For The Worms
Pink Floyd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Eins, zwei, drei, alle
Ooh, you cannot reach me now
Ooh, no matter how you try
Goodbye, cruel world, it's over
Walk on by

Sitting in a bunker here behind my wall
Waiting for the worms to come
In perfect isolation here behind my wall
Waiting for the worms to come

We're waiting to succeed and going to convene outside Brixton
Town Hall where we're going to be
Waiting to cut out the deadwood
Waiting to clean up the city
Waiting to follow the worms
Waiting to put on a black shirt
Waiting to weed out the weaklings
Waiting to smash in their windows
And kick in their doors
Waiting for the final solution
To strengthen the strain
Waiting to follow the worms
Waiting to turn on the showers
And fire the ovens
Waiting for the queens and the coons
And the reds and the Jews
Waiting to follow the worms

Would you like to see Britannia
Rule again, my friend?
All you have to do is follow the worms
Would you like to send our colored cousins
Home again, my friend?

All you need to do is follow the worms

The worms will convene outside Brixton Bus Station

Overall Meaning

"Waiting For The Worms" is a powerful and haunting song by Pink Floyd that speaks to the underlying themes of oppression and fascism that can be found throughout their album "The Wall." The song starts with a chilling German count-in, "Eins, zwei, drei, alle," followed by the lead singer Roger Waters telling the listener that they cannot reach him, "no matter how you try." He bids farewell to the "cruel world" and retreats behind his wall, waiting for the worms to come. This sets the stage for the second half of the song where a group of fascists are "waiting to follow the worms" to clean up the city, cut out the deadwood, and basically impose their will upon society. These lines are particularly chilling as they evoke the image of the Holocaust and the Nazi's final solution to "weed out the weaklings." The lyrics become even more disturbing as the group starts to wait for the "final solution," talking about turning on the showers and firing the ovens, essentially talking about the mass extermination of entire groups of people.

The song is a scathing criticism of fascism and oppression, and it touches on topics like nationalism, racism, and authoritarianism. At the same time, it highlights the wall that people build around themselves to isolate themselves from the world, creating a divide between themselves and others. Roger Waters has said that the songwriting for "Waiting For The Worms" was inspired by a trip he took to Italy where he saw fascists marching through the streets with black shirts on. The song was meant to be a warning about how easy it is for people to be drawn into fascist ideology and how they can become complicit in atrocities.

The Worms will convene at Brixton Bus Station
We'll be moving along at about 12 o'clock down Stockwell Road and Then Point and We'll start Heading Towards
{Abbot's Road}
And walk calmly with resistance leaving , twelve minutes to three we'll be moving along Lambeth Road towards Vauxhall Bridge.

Now when we get to the other side of Vauxhall Bridge
we're in Westminster {Borough } area.

It's quite possible we may encounter some Jew boys all the way from four to five and take them by the way we go.

And they came out at mid abbots
Place and we saw them killed.

Million of gay people screaming
Murder! Murder! Came All Around.

And Shoot!. Remember to make it in the highclock corner or all you're killed.

WE'RE IN THE DOOR!
NOW CLOSE THE DOOR!
CLOSE THE DAMN DOOR!
THE DOOR! THE DOOR!
THE DOOR!
Hammer! Hammer! Hammer!
Hammer!  Hammer! Hammer!
Hammer! Hammer! Hammer!
Hammer!

Stop!

Esperando Pelos Vermes

Um, dois, três, todos!

Ooh, você não pode me alcançar agora
Ooh, não importa o quanto você tente
Adeus mundo cruel, acabou

Waiting.. to follow the worms
Waiting.. to turn on the showers
and fire the ovens
I always feel terror when I hear those lines.

@Mortablunt

it's the callous anticipation. 'Yup, gonna murder some people on an industrial scale. Just as planned. It's for the best. You agreed to this when you said you wanted Britannia to rule again, my friend.'

@dragishawk9564

Yep. I still remember my middle school English class where we learned about the Holocaust. When the camps were discovered near the end of the war and the full scale of what the Nazis were doing to so many people came to light, we got a taste of what true evil looked like. What it truly looked like, felt like and meant to try to kill off an entire people. And the worst part is that there are still people out there that want to do this kind of shit all over again.
