According to Sia via Slovenian site RTV “Alive” was co-written with Adele and Tobias Jesso Jr for Adele’s third album, 25. However, it was rejected by Adele from the project.
On September 21, 2015 Sia updated all her social media accounts with a new profile photo, confirming that the single will arrive on 25 September. On the same day the official single cover was revealed.
On September 23, a teaser was released through YouTube, also announcing the earlier premiere date of September 24.
On October 20, a lyric video was released for this song on Sia’s VEVO channel, catching public eye from the minute it was released.
Sia to Slovenian site RTV:
It’s about Adele’s life, so I now sing a song from Adele’s perspective. This is the first song from this new project. I’m calling it "This Is Acting" because they are songs I was writing for other people, so I didn’t go into it thinking, ‘this is something I would say’. It’s more like play-acting. It’s fun. We wrote three songs in two days, and none of them made the cut, and “Alive” was one of them. I said to [Adele], “Do you mind if I pitch it to, let’s say, Rihanna?” She said, “Yeah but can you take my vocal off of it? Because I don’t want my vocal floating around there on a demo.” And I was like, ‘Sure’. So I went and recut the vocal and everybody in my life was like, ‘You can’t give this away to anybody.'

I grew up overnight
I played alone
I played on my own
I survived
Hey
I wanted everything I never had
I wore envy and I hated that
But I survived
I had a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go
Where the wind don't change
And nothing in the ground can ever grow
No hope, just lies
And you're taught to cry into your pillow
But I survived
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I found solace in the strangest place
Way in the back of my mind
I saw my life in a stranger's face
And it was mine
I had a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go
Where the wind don't change
And nothing in the ground can ever grow
No hope, just lies
And you're taught to cry into your pillow
But I survived
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
You took it all, but I'm still breathing
I have made every single mistake
That you could ever possibly make
I took and I took and I took what you gave
But you never noticed that I was in pain
I knew what I wanted, I went in and got it
Did all the things that you said that I wouldn't
I told you that I would never be forgotten
And all in spite of you
And I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm alive (You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
(You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
I'm alive (You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
(You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
I'm alive (You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
(You took it all, but I'm still breathing)
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
I'm alive
Sia's song "Alive" is an emotional ballad about resilience in the face of adversity. The first verse sets the scene with the thunderstorm representing the pain and struggle that the singer has experienced from a young age, causing her to grow up quickly and become independent. Despite feeling envy and hate, she manages to survive.
The second verse continues with the idea of going through a difficult time as the singer sings about having a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for a place of deep sadness and despair, where there is no hope for the future. The line "Where the wind don't change and nothing in the ground can ever grow" emphasizes the feeling of being stuck and unable to move forward. Despite being taught to cry into their pillow, the singer has managed to survive.
The chorus is a powerful declaration that the singer is still breathing, still alive, and still standing despite everything they have been through. The verses that follow, along with the repetition of the chorus, reinforce the theme of resilience and survival. The refrain "You took it all, but I'm still breathing" is particularly poignant and gives voice to the strength of the human spirit.
Overall, "Alive" is a moving and inspirational song that speaks to the heart of anyone who has faced adversity and overcome it.
