Do You
Spoon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Tututututututututu)

I was on 45th
I was half out of a dive
Yeah I knew that you saw me
You laughed when I looked back
I thought I'd given up
Now I didn't feel so bad
And then a shock went through me
And then I walked right back

Do you want to get understood?
Do you want one thing or are you looking for sainthood?
Do you run when it's just getting good?
Or do you, do you, do you, do you, wooh

(Tututututututututu)

Someone get Popsicles
Someone do something bout this heat
'Cause it's late in October
And tar's still melting in the streets
You tiptoe for ages and lose yourself
Flipping back pages, unbuckling belts

Oh love, that's the way love comes
Do you, don't you know that that's the way love comes?
Do you feel it black and blue?
Or do you, do you, do you, do you

(Tututututututututu) Wooh wooh wooh

(Tututututututututu) Oh yeah
(Hm hm hm)

Overall Meaning

The Spoon's song "Do You" is a contemplative piece that seeks to understand the nature of love and relationships. The song paints a picture of the singer who is lost, feeling defeated and is seeking to understand the nature of love's ebb and flow. In the first verse, the singer describes a situation where he is half out of a dive and spots someone who laughs at him when he looks back. This encounter stirs up emotion and prompts the singer to walk right back, signifying a united attraction between the two people.

In the chorus, the singer asks a series of rhetorical questions directed towards his partner, trying to explore their true intentions. He wonders whether they want to be understood or strive for sainthood. He further inquires whether they tend to run away when things in their relationship are just getting good. The repetitive "Do you" refrain brings emphasis to these questions suggesting that they demand some level of introspection.

The second verse in "Do You" paints a picture of a city experiencing oppression from excessive heat. The singer calls for help, urging someone to do something about the heat that's still affecting the town late in October. The following lines describe the confusion and the loss encountered when people lose themselves to love. This line brings to light the dichotomy that is often associated with love – the tenderness and the pain that it brings.

In summary, Spoon's song "Do You" prompts one to question love's nature and its perception. It raises significant queries about what people may expect from their partners while exploring the joys and highs, as well as the struggles and pain, that come with intimate relationships.

I’m 52 years old. I consider myself a lover of music and tonight, before bed, I sat outside to have a smoke. In the darkness, I could hear this song coming from my neighbors house down the road. After a simple google search of lyrics, I found the artist, the song and this video. How do I not know of this band??? Now the question is, did I find Spoon, or did Spoon find me……

@jasonvickory5112

There are so many bands out there that don't get the exposure they deserve. Talented musicians aren't always famous and famous musicians aren't always talented. Keep digging......

56 years old here, same thing happened to me. I heard “The Underdog” being played at Value Village in Fairbanks Alaska, googled the lyric “you got no fear of the underdog / that’s why you will not survive.” And here I am four years later.

Wow, kinda freaky to read your comment! I will be 52 on Sept. 26 and did not hear of Spoon until about 2 months ago when I discovered them on Pandora - I have been listening ever since & am still mind blown this band has escaped me all of this time. Like you, I have always been very into music and a huge lover of anything good, regardless of style, and also depending on my mood. Oh, and my zip code is 19702, by the way!!

Great song, vastly underrated. Driving through and remaining oblivious (perhaps numb?) to surrounding uncertainty and chaos symbolizes going through the motions in a disappointing, unfulfilled relationship. Perfectly relatable. So often we give it our all only to feel let down — yet we carry on with these things while implicitly accepting dissatisfaction.

Especially when there are kids involved, as indicated toward the end of the video.

At least this is how I see it. The beautiful yet chilling outro implies, "it is what it is, and life goes on..."
