'Baby' So Cruel
U2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We crossed the line
Who pushed who over?
It doesn't matter to you
It matters to me

We're cut adrift
We're still floating
I'm only hanging on
To watch you go down
My love

I disappeared in you
You disappeared from me
I gave you everything you ever wanted
It wasn't what you wanted

The men who love you, you hate the most
They pass through you like a ghost
They look for you, but your spirit is in the air
Baby, you're nowhere

Oh love
You say in love there are no rules
Oh love
Sweetheart
You're so cruel

Desperation is a tender trap
It gets you every time
You put your lips to her lips
To stop the lie

Her skin is pale like God's only dove
Screams like an angel for your love
Then she makes you watch her from above
And you need her like a drug

Oh love
You say in love there are no rules
Oh love
Sweetheart
You're so cruel

She wears my love like a see-through dress
Her lips say one thing
Her movements something else
Oh love, like a screaming flower
Love, dying every hour, love

You don't know if it's fear or desire
Danger the drug that takes you higher
Head in heaven, fingers in the mire

Her heart is racing, you can't keep up
The night is bleeding like a cut
Between the horses of love and lust
We are trampled
Underfoot

Oh love
You say in love there are no rules
Oh love
Sweetheart
You're so cruel

Oh love
To stay with you I'd be a fool
Oh, huh

Sweetheart
You're so cruel

Overall Meaning

"So Cruel" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It was released as the fifth track on their 1991 album Achtung Baby. This song is telling a story about a love affair between two people that is past its prime. The singer (Bono) observes the destructive relationship and just how toxic and cruel it has become. The song opens with the line "We crossed the line, who pushed who over?" indicating that something significant has happened between the couple. Bono observes that it doesn't matter to one of them (presumably the woman) what happened, but it matters to him.

The couple in question has reached a point where they are "cut adrift" and "floating". Bono admits that he is only holding on to watch the woman fall, which suggests that he is not innocent in the relationship's breakdown. They have both given each other everything they thought they wanted, but it wasn't enough. The men who love the woman most are the ones she hates, and they pass through her like a ghost. Bono suggests that her spirit is in the air, and she is nowhere.

The song uses desperation as a metaphor for the woman's need for validation and attention. Her skin is pale like a dove, and she screams like an angel for love. Bono suggests that she makes the man watch her from above and that he needs her like a drug. The love between the couple is destructive, and the woman wears the love like a see-through dress. She says one thing with her lips, but her movements are saying something else. Bono refers to the love as dying every hour and a screaming flower. He wonders if it is fear or desire that is driving this love and if it is dangerous, like a drug that takes you higher. In the end, it is unclear whether the couple will persevere or if they will be trampled underfoot by the horses of love and lust.

I took this CD with me to college in August 1992. Listened to it weekly (no internet, no computer, no TV). So Cruel was my favorite on Achtung, yet rarely played on the radio. Just yesterday, I tune into U2 Radio on Sirius XM, look down at the screen, and see "Baby, So Cruel"...What is this? BLOWN AWAY by this version. SO DAMN GOOD!

Listening to this version, I can see why some of the lyrics changed - this is like accidentally overhearing a couple in the midst of a breakup. Just a little too personal. But what a fantastic bit of songwriting, either way.
