A Sort Of Homecoming
U2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And you know it's time to go
Through the sleet and driving snow
Across the fields of mourning
Light in the distance

And you hunger for the time
Time to heal, desire, time
And your earth moves beneath
Your own dream landscape

Oh, oh, oh
On borderland we run

I'll be there
I'll be there
Tonight
A high road
A high road out from here

The city walls are all come down
The dust, a smoke screen all around
See faces ploughed like fields that once
Gave no resistance

And we live by the side of the road
On the side of a hill
As the valley explode
Dislocated, suffocated
The land grows weary of its own

Oh come away, oh come away, oh come away, I say I
Oh come away, come away, oh come, oh come away, I say I

Oh, oh, oh
On borderland we run
And still we run
We run and don't look back
I'll be there
I'll be there
Tonight
Tonight

I'll be there tonight, I believe
I'll be there so high
I'll be there tonight, tonight

Oh come away, I say, I say oh
Oh come away, I say

The wind will crack in winter time
This bomb-blast lightning waltz
No spoken words, just a scream

Oh
Oh

Tonight we'll build a bridge
Across the sea and land
See the sky, the burning rain
She will die and live again
Tonight

And your heart beats so slow
Through the rain and fallen snow
Across the fields of mourning
Lights in the distance

Oh don't sorrow, no don't weep
For tonight, at last

I am coming home
I am coming home

Overall Meaning

The song A Sort of Homecoming by U2 speaks of the longing and yearning for a sense of belonging and a place to call home. The opening lines of the song suggest that it is time to leave and go on a journey, despite the challenges of the weather and the environment. The singer is searching for healing and the time to fulfill their desires, while their world is shifting and changing underneath them. In the midst of this upheaval, the singer finds solace in the idea of a high road, a way out of their current situation.

As the song progresses, the singer reflects on the past, recalling the city walls that once defined their world, now long gone. The landscape is barren, and the people around the singer feel dislocated and suffocated. Nevertheless, the singer keeps running, not looking back, and promising to be there tonight. They urge themselves and others to come away and leave their troubles behind.

The tone of the song changes in the final section, as the singer envisions a bridge being built across the sea and land. They see burning rain and a world in flux, but amidst it all, they hear their heart beating, slowly but surely. Finally, they declare that they are coming home, a sentiment that suggests a resolution to the wanderings and yearnings of the song.

@CrookDistrict.

Who else think that the live performances of U2 are better than the recorded songs? So much energy when they perform live! Incredible!

@CrookDistrict.

By the way, we are an upcoming band who are very inspired by the music of U2. If you are interested, head over there 👈 and let us know what you think of our music. Especially now, it is very hard for new bands to let people hear their music. Your support would help us a lot!

@paulwood6263

@crook district, I think more than any other band, that many of there songs are better live but I also like the studio versions in a different way. An example of this is streets have no name and bad from the rattle and hum movie. At first listen the live versions blow the studio versions away with more intensity and more directness but the studio versions have a subtlety that I also love.

@bownozomu8825

Strongly agree

@joejameson6397

Good observation, agree! The songs are meant to be played live. Cchecked your songs out as well. Really cool stuff, keep it going!

@youtou_13

I love ❤️ the live version because it’s more interesting. You can see the energy of the band.

Chris Martin (Coldplay): "I don't buy weekend tickets to Ireland and hang out in front of their gates, but U2 are the only band whose entire catalogue I know by heart. The first song on The Unforgettable Fire, "A Sort of Homecoming", I know backward and forward—it's so rousing, brilliant and beautiful. It's one of the first songs I played to my unborn baby".

@rickf

Which explains why Coldplay is basically "U2 Lite".

@StratsRUs

Coldplay are shoyt

@bginna

We know. He ripped them and Radiohead off so he could have a career.
