Before "Old Town Road" and his eventual smash success, he independently released a mixtape titled "NASARATI" as well as various stand-alone songs to mediocre success.
In December 2018, Lil Nas X released his break-out smash hit single "Old Town Road", alongside its visualizer, inspired by the video game "Red Dead Redemption 2".
The track peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was controversially removed from the Hot Country Songs after debuting at number 19.
On April 5, 2019, he released a remix of the song featuring vocals from fellow country artist Billy Ray Cyrus, which became the most famous version out of the five existent variations of "Old Town Road" and is Cyrus' biggest hit yet.
Other remixes of this song include artists such as Diplo, Mason Ramsey, Young Thug and RM from K-pop boy band BTS.
From April to August 2019, "Old Town Road", which credited Billy Ray Cyrus as a featured artist every week since its second frame at the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100, spent a total of 19 weeks at #1, surpassing Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" as well as Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber's "Despacito" as the song with most weeks at the top of the chart.
Lil Nas X released his debut extended play "7", featuring the aforementioned hit track and its Billy Ray Cyrus remix on June 21st.
"7" debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and stayed at that position for two consecutive weeks, despite only being an extended play.
Apart from "Old Town Road", the EP spawned a hit track in the form of Nirvana-sampling follow-up single "Panini", which peaked at #5 in the USA and went platinum and gold in Australia and New Zealand respectively. It additionally reached #6 in Greece and #11 in Hungary and Estonia.
The Cardi B-assisted non-single "Rodeo", debuted and peaked at #22 in the USA, landing Lil Nas X a moderate hit.
In August 2019, Lil Nas X performed the track "Panini" at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, where "Old Town Road" won 2 awards, including "Song Of The Year", out of 8 nominations. This is Lil Nas X's first major award ever.
The rapper will feature on a song titled "School Globes" from XXXTENTACION's upcoming posthumous album "Bad Vibes Forever", with a fall 2019 expected release date.
He is set release his debut album, unnamed at the moment, in 2019.

Lil Nas X Lyrics
I caught it bad just today
You hit me with a call to your place
Ain't been out in a while anyway
Was hoping I could catch you throwin' smiles at my face
Romantic talking? You don't even have to try
You're cute enough to fuck with me tonight
Lookin' at the table, all I see is weed and white
Baby, you livin' the life, but nigga, you ain't living right
Cocaine and drinking wit' your friends
You live in the dark, boy, I cannot pretend
I'm not fazed, only here to sin
If Eve ain't in your garden, you know that you can
Call me when you want
Call me when you need
Call me in the morning
I'll be on the way
Call me when you want
Call me when you need
Call me out by your name
I'll be on the way, like
Mm, mm, mm
Mm, mm, mm
Ayy, ayy
I wanna sell what you're buying
I wanna feel on your ass in Hawaii
I want that jet lag from fuckin' and flyin'
Shoot a child in your mouth while I'm ridin'
Oh-oh, why me?
A sign of the times every time that I speak
A dime and a nine, it was mine every week
What a time, an incline, God was shining on me
Now I can't leave
And now I'm actin' hella elite
Never want the niggas that's in my league
I want to fuck the ones I envy, I envy
Cocaine and drinking wit' your friends
You live in the dark, boy, I cannot pretend
I'm not fazed, only here to sin
If Eve ain't in your garden, you know that you can
Call me when you want
Call me when you need
Call me in the morning
I'll be on the way
Call me when you want
Call me when you need
Call me out by your name
I'll be on the way, (oh) like
Call me by your name
Tell me you love me in private
Call me by your name
I do not care if you lying
