Through the big top tent up high
Here before and after me
Shinin′ down on me
Moon, tell me if I could
Send up my heart to you?
So, when I die, which I must do
Could it shine down here with you?
Cause my love is mine, all mine
I love, mine, mine, mine
Nothing in the world belongs to me
But my love, mine, all mine, all mine
My baby here on earth
Showed me what my heart was worth
So, when it comes to be my turn
Could you shine it down here for her?
Cause my love is mine, all mine
I love, mine, mine, mine
Nothing in the world belongs to me
But my love, mine, all mine
Nothing in the world is mine for free
But my love, mine, all mine, all mine
Overall Meaning
The lyrics of Mitski's song "My Love Mine All Mine" evoke a sense of longing and a deep connection to something greater than oneself. The moon serves as a symbolic element throughout the song, representing a source of light, guidance, and hope.
The opening lines, "Moon, a hole of light / Through the big top tent up high," suggest that the moon is a constant presence, watching over the singer. It is a familiar and comforting sight, dependable and unchanging. The following lines, "Here before and after me / Shinin' down on me," convey a sense of timelessness and continuity, emphasizing the moon as a companion that will always be there.
The singer then contemplates the possibility of sending their heart to the moon, asking, "Moon, tell me if I could / Send up my heart to you?" Here, the heart represents a deep and intense love, one that is so overwhelming that they wonder if it could reach even the moon. The singer longs for their love to be immortalized, even after their own death. They ask if their love could "shine down here with you" when they eventually pass away.
The chorus, "Cause my love is mine, all mine / I love, mine, mine, mine / Nothing in the world belongs to me / But my love, mine, all mine, all mine," highlights the possessiveness and exclusivity of the singer's love. They recognize that they may not have ownership over anything else in the world, but their love is entirely theirs. It is a powerful and cherished emotion that sets them apart.
The second verse introduces the presence of a baby or a loved one on earth, shifting the perspective from personal to interpersonal love. The singer acknowledges that this person has shown them the worth of their own heart, and asks the moon to shine their love down on them after their own passing. The desire for their love to continue, even when they are no longer present, reveals a yearning for immortality and eternal connections.
In summary, "My Love Mine All Mine" explores the deep emotional connection between the singer and their love, as well as their yearning for that love to endure beyond their own lifetime. The moon symbolizes constancy, guidance, and hope, serving as a silent witness to their desires.
