Read Full BioŞebnem Ferah (born 12th April 1972) is a Turkish singer and song-writer. She was the lead vocalist of the all-female hard rock band Volvox (TR) until 1994, after which she went on to pursue a solo career. Her musical style varies from acoustic rock to hard rock, though her later albums have progressively incorporated more of the hard rock sound.
Born in Yalova to Turkish immigrant parents from Skopje, Macedonia, Ferah got her first guitar when she was in the first year in boarding at Bursa Namık Sözeri High School. She took lessons on the acoustic guitar, and during her second year she hired a studio with her friends and formed the group Pegasus. The group had their first stage experience during a rock festival in Bursa, in 1987. After a while, Pegasus disbanded. In 1988 with her four friends, Ferah formed Volvox, which was named after a microorganism that they had encountered in a biology lesson.
After a period during which she attended Middle East Technical University, studying economics in Ankara, she moved to Istanbul, where she attended classes on English language and literature at the Istanbul University. For two years she performed in various bars with Volvox, until they disbanded in 1994.
She released her first solo album, Kadın in 1996, and has gone on to release a total of six full studio albums, the last one being Benim Adım Orman, released in 2009. In addition to composing the music and writing the lyrics of every song in her albums, she occasionally sings on stage cover versions of work by artists of similar vocal qualities and style, such as Amy Lee and Skin.
On her third album, Perdeler, she collaborated with the Finnish cello rock band Apocalyptica.
Ferah's current group consists of Buket Doran (bass guitar), Metin Türkcan (electric guitar), Aykan İlkan (drums), and Ozan Tügen (keyboard), who have been performing with her in studio and on stage since her third album, Perdeler.

Her şeyi gömdüm, kalbim mezar
Her şeyi gömdüm, kalbim mezar
Surlar ardında ışıl ışıl ağaçlı bulvar
Kime sorsan gösterir yerde bir yükselti var
Her şeyi gömdüm, kalbim mezar
The lyrics to Şebnem Ferah's song Kalbim Mezar (My Heart is a Grave) are both haunting and reflective. The song begins with the realization that another day has come to an end, and it's time for sleep. The next lines refer to two famous literary characters - the Little Prince and the Little Match Girl - who represent the innocence and vulnerability of childhood. The juxtaposition of these two characters represents the duality of life, where one minute we may feel like a prince and the next, a poor match girl.
The chorus of the song is a repetition of two lines that symbolize the weight of time and regret - a moment can feel like a thousand years and a word can carry a thousand consequences. The singer's mind is like a traveler, always searching, always longing, and the color of her soul has become dark - a reference to sadness and mourning.
The second verse repeats the chorus and is followed by a description of a bright and luminous boulevard behind walls. This could represent the disparity between the outer facade of a person or a city and the inner turmoil that lies beneath. Everyone will point out a mound of soil, indicating the presence of a grave, a final resting place. The last line of the verse is a powerful metaphor for burying all of one's desires and hopes - "I buried everything, my heart is a grave."
The song repeats the chorus and the description of the boulevard, emphasizing the futility of time and the inevitability of death. The hidden metaphor behind the entire song is that life is fleeting, just like the Little Match Girl's flame, and everyone's eventual fate is to become a grave that holds all their unfulfilled dreams and unspoken words.
