In 1977 he was awarded the Tohoku-Hokkaido Folk Song Prize. In 1979 he was awarded the Japanese Folk Song Association's prefectural folk award. Oizumi had his first Oricon enka number one hit in 1999, with his single "孫", which spent a consecutive 26 weeks on top of that chart, peaked at number 3 on the Oricon top 200 singles chart, and sold more than 1,000,000 copies in Japan. At the 14th Japan Gold Disc Awards in 2000, he was awarded a special award in the enka/kayokyoku category. Due to his eldest son suffering from bone marrow leukaemia, Oizumi is an avid supporter of the Japanese bone marrow bank.
