From the rowdy, country-influenced drinking anthem "Pints of Guinness Make You Strong," to the somber closing notes of "8 Full Hours of Sleep," Against Me! performs every track with the passion of those who truly believe a song among friends can start a movement for change. The band's leftist political agenda is often offset by empowering social lyrics boasting sentiments of unity, individualism, and self-awareness. Tracks like the lively and rebellious "Those Anarcho Punks Are Mysterious..." declare that "We rock/Because it's us against them/We've found our own reasons to sing," while the album's title track urgently professes, "Everyone would leave with the memory that there was no place else in the world and this was where they always belonged." Often deviating from the standard punk musical blueprint, Against Me!'s blend of energetic folk/punk rock is nothing short of refreshing and engaging. Reinventing Axl Rose is a true classic that brings listeners right into the dirty basements and dive bars that birthed the band -- and serves as the foundation to where they would head next."

Against Me! Lyrics
Evelyn sits by the elevator doors
It's been thirty seven years since James dies on St. Patrick's Day in 1964
But she could not hold it against him
There were times when there was nothing she could do
But lie in bed all day beside a picture of them together
A picture of better days
And just like James, I'll be drinking Irish tonight
And the memory of his last work week will be gone forever
Evelyn I'm not coming home tonight!
If we're never together
If I'm never back again
Well I swear to God that I'll love you forever
Evelyn I'm not coming home tonight!
In all the years that went by she said
She'd always love him
And from the day that he died
She never loved again
In his wallet she kept in her nightstand
An A.A. card and a lock of red hair
She kept secrets of pride locked so tight in her heart
It killed a part of her before the rest was gone.
She said, "If I would have known just how things would have ended up, I just would have let myself die."
And just like James, I'll be drinking Irish tonight
And the memory of his last work week will be gone forever
Evelyn I'm not coming home tonight!
If we're never together
If I'm never back again
Well I swear to God that I'll love you forever
Evelyn I'm not coming home tonight!

It's been 37 years since James died on St. Patrick's Day, 1964
She could not hold it against him
There were times when there was nothing she could do

A picture of better days
And just like James, I'll be drinking Irish tonight

Evelyn, I'm not coming home tonight

In a basement party, right after high school. I'm making out with my first girlfriend ever. My friend interrupts, sets a ghetto blaster down with this cd in and says "Hey, I know you'll like this". Been listening to them ever since.

If there were ever such a thing as “perfect songs” they most DEF were written by Laura Jane Grace. She’s easily one of if not THE most prolific song writer/performer of our generation. Against Me! has been my favorite band since I was first turned onto them via a dubbed cassette of their early demos / releases by friends (or friends of friends(??🤣) of the band circa 1999. I was forever hooked IMMEDIATELY from that day forward ( Noted I was a fresh transplant to Central Fla from NJ at the time and Gainesville was not very far north from where I was now living. I’ll tell ya the stars were aligned in my favor that day through a chance encounter at a Quick Stop. I was the “new guy” in town and had a girlfriend at home and I had been approached by a couple of cute punx rock girls…one of which had the hots for me and that’s how I wound up with the cassette that changed my life. I’m sure (I know!!) Against Me! would’ve caught my attention eventually but my story just feels much more poetic/ serendipitous the way it went down…anyhow suffice it to say that Against Me! was one of those bands that came into my life and blessed me with some of the most amazing music I’d ever encountered and I couldn’t be more grateful for her and her incredible art. Quite a rant, I know, but I feel like I can never express my love for the music that wound up being the soundtrack for countless late night (all night) drunken sing alongs with friends as our house parties were “winding down” 🤣 on the late night. This rant is dedicated to anybody that can relate to any of this…you KNOW who you are and you GET IT!! So those who get it I love you!! Cheers 🍻!!! Up the PUNX XOXOXOX ❤️❤️👊🏻👊🏾🤯

I remember seeing these guys play in a room of about 40 ppl. I'm happy for their successes but I still do love the old tunes. I hope they continue to play old stuff at their concerts so we can all sing along

My first Against Me! show was the basement of the First Unitarian Church in Philly. If anybody was lucky enough to experience any of their early basement shows you know the amazing treat I speak of…those days are long gone so anybody else that can say that they were there for those basement days know how lucky we were to have been there!! We really DID dance like no one was watching with one fist in the air! And in those moments time seemed to have had stopped and there was no place in the world that anyone in attendance would’ve rather been. I’m really not being cliche when I say this but that first Against Me! show was transcendent of space and time and nothing short of magic. I honestly cannot say that about many bands but I can definitely say it about AM! I’ve seen MANY a punk rock show involving MANY legends of the scene and Against Me! put on a show that was absolutely unforgettable and I feel blessed for being in the absolute right place in the absolute right time…I’ve enjoyed and RAGED at MANY a punx show but I still say that the first Against Me! show that I participated in (it’s definitely more than a show but an experience) was one of my more unforgettable events in life!!
Cheers 🍻
