Sometime after 2002, Alby had just finished on a group of demos with longtime collaborators Josh Levine (Lyrics) and Doug Martin (Production), and almost without any real reason stopped writing songs. Reasons for his writer's block are still not quite clear.
Having played drums since the age of 7 and learning the guitar by age 14, Alby has dreamed of being a musician for as long as he can remember. By the time he arrived at Goddard College in the fall of 1997 to study jazz he was ready to take on the world. Having studied and/or performed with musicians such as Doug Perkins, Paul Asbell, Ernie Stires, Don Glasgo, Michael Ray, Marshall Allen, and Gabe Jarrett he began focusing not only on drumming (his sole instrument) but also songwriting.
By 1999 Alby left Goddard to hit the road with Damn Brandy a young band that gave him the opportunity to tour all over the eastern US performing over 150 shows in 2 years. However, when the band dissolved he moved back to NYC to eventually open up a recording studio and focus on production.
Alby currently lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn a stones throw from his Studio, Rough Magic Productions and after almost 5 years without any new original songs he has emerged with some of his best work to date. Currently working on an album entitled Angels and Demons (due at the end of 2008), Alby has reemerged wearing the coat of alt country, and this Jersey boy can actually get away with it. Having passed through many different musical tastes from Heavy Metal to Jazz to Progressive Rock, this new batch of country infused rock bears the scars of age and experience. Take a listen to the depth of emotions and enjoy the sound of Alby Cohen, reborn.
