In addition to playing guitar in these bands, he also released two solo albums.
Bathgate has a strong musical pedigree but can sometimes appear to be overshadowed by his more outspoken musical partner Chris Knox. More cautious at the microphone than Knox, Bathgate more than makes up for this reticence with his towering walls of guitar magic and the careful structures of his songwriting. Bathgate's solo recordings include two albums and contributions to various collections of covers.

Filthy Little Star
on Slow Parade
Absolutely grey
slow parade
In Newbury do not wait
pretty boys
pretty girls
watching the traffic lights change
hurry up and change
hurry up and change
down into the square
she combs her hair
at the window in a bus cafe
old man frowns at the ground
thinks one day his luck will change
hurry up and change hurry up and change
angel or devil
we don’t know
to scared to let it show
drifting to some stupid hiss
like fools and pay no wit
ordinary day
slow parade
hail shadows in the rain
stuffs wrapped ‘round
coats popping down
we wait for the season to change
hurry up and change
hurry up and change
angel or devil
we don’t know
to scared to let it show
drifting to some stupid hiss
like fools and pay no wit
