The album is in many ways unusual for the band even though their musical style has always been difficult to pigeonhole: 'Freak' is a radical shift from the post-punk/hardcore easthetics Armia was associated with towards freer forms and the stylistics ranging from jazz-rock to stoner-rock.
The band's main line-up includes for the first time Jakub Bartoszewski playing French horn (a long-time stand-in for Krzysztof Banasik in concerts), but 'Freak' is also remarkable for the guest contributions from Armia's founder-members Robert Brylewski and Sławomir Gołaszewski. For the first time since the debut, there are prominent saxophone parts on an Armia album.
Contrary to all the previous albums, all the lyrics on 'Freak' are in English (Tomasz Budzyński co-wrote them with Gerard Nowak). The booklet places the actual song lyrics in larger forms of poetical narratives.
'Grot the Engine Driver' is loosely based on a short story of the same title ("Maszynista Grot") by Stefan Grabiński.
