Distorted Light Beam
Bastille Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To start a riot
Distort the light beam
Until I like me
It isn't enough
If this is real life
I'll stick to dreaming
Come see what I see
Feeling like
If this is life
I'm choosing fiction
Oh, whoa, oh, whoa
Call it faith, call it fate
The fantasy's the same (uh)
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can do anything
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can go anywhere
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can be anyone
So don't wake me up, don't wake me up
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can do anything
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can go anywhere
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can be anyone
So don't wake me up, don't wake me up
Level it up
Delete my history
Choose how you see me
And the future's easy
Level it up
In here I'm winning
Defeat the big boss
Game over, your loss
Feeling like
This ain't life
I'm choosing fiction
Oh, whoa, oh, whoa
Call it faith, call it fate
The fantasy is the same
So
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can do anything
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can go anywhere
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can be anyone
So don't wake me up, don't wake me up
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can do anything
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can go anywhere
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can be anyone
So don't wake me up, don't wake me up
Hope I never wake up
I never get tired
No, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can do anything
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can go anywhere
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can be anyone
Don't wake me up, don't wake me up
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can do anything
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can go anywhere
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can be anyone
So don't wake me up, don't wake me up
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can do anything
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can go anywhere
When I'm dreaming tonight
I can be anyone
So don't wake me up, don't wake me up
The song "Distorted Light Beam" by Bastille expresses the idea of escaping reality and entering a dream world where anything and everything is possible. The lyrics suggest that the real world is not enough to incite change, and in order to feel content with oneself, there needs to be a distortion of reality. The lyrics "It isn't enough to start a riot, distort the light beam until I like me" express this idea of having to alter oneself and the world around them to achieve satisfaction.
The song then goes on to suggest that this distorted reality is preferable to real life, with the lyrics "Feeling like, if this is life I'm choosing fiction." The dream world is seen as a way to defeat the struggles of reality, where one can "go anywhere" and "be anyone."
The chorus repeats the idea of the dream world being a place of ultimate freedom and possibility: "When I'm dreaming tonight, I can do anything, I can go anywhere, I can be anyone."
Overall, the song is a commentary on the power of imagination and the desire to escape the constraints of reality. It suggests the idea that sometimes in order to find happiness and fulfilment, we must create our own dreams and believe in their power.
