Hauntingly, magnificently beautiful, but the musical background is rudimentary and worse. How atrocious! I do love it anyhow but better is her 1952 recording with Oscar Peterson!

I love this song, it also makes me think of a bunch of 30s gangsters all sitting in an underground speakeasy watching Billie Holiday singing this song on a little stage with a room full of people and giant smoke clouds rising and filling the room up

This was originally a rather operatic song (in the style of musicals from the early 1930's) sing by beautiful actress Irene Dunne. This was included in my mother's repertoire of 1930's songs, which she sang just about daily accompany9ing herself 0on the piano. More than 60 years ago, when I was twelve, I discovered a cache of 78 RPM jazz recordings (my older cousin's) in a closet in our house, and among them was Billie singing this (the later version with Oscar Peterson). I was fascinated by it because no not of her rendition was as it was originally written, and yet it WAS the song. That was when I realized what jazz was. She'd found the emotional essence of the song that went beyond its melody and plumbed its depths!
