Travelin' Prayer
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning

Hey Lord, take a look all around
And I'd a find where my baby's gonna be
Hey Lord, would ya look out for her tonight
'Cause she is far across the sea
Hey Lord, would ya look out for her tonight
And make sure that she's gonna be alright
And things are gonna be alright with me

Hey Lord, would ya look out for her tonight
And make sure that all her dreams are sweet
Said now, would ya guide her on the roads
And make them softer for her feet
Hey Lord, would ya look out for her tonight
And make sure that she's gonna be alright
Until she's home and here with me

Hey, Lord would ya look out for her tonight
If she is sleepin' under the sky
Said now, make sure the ground she's sleepin' on
Is always warm and dry
Um, don'tcha give her too much rain
Try to keep her away from pain
Because my baby hates to cry

Hey Lord, would ya look out for her tonight
'Cause it gets rough along the way
Said now, this song seems strange is just because
I don't know how to pray
Um, won'tcha give her peace of mind
And if you ever find the time
Won'tcha tell her I miss her everyday

Hey Lord, take a look all around
And I'd a-find where my baby's gonna be
Hey Lord, would ya look out for her tonight
'Cause she is far across the sea
Hey Lord, would ya look out for her tonight
And make sure that she's gonna be alright
Until she's home and here with me
With me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Travelin' Prayer" by Billy Joel is a heartfelt prayer from a man to the Lord to look after his love who is far away. The song starts with the singer asking the Lord to find his lover and ensure that she is safe and sound. He pleads with the Lord to guide her in her journey and protect her from harm. He also implores the Lord to make her dreams sweet and keep her feet soft.

The singer then asks the Lord to look after his lover's sleeping arrangements. He asks that the ground she sleeps on is warm and dry and that she is not affected by too much rain or pain. He then requests the Lord to give his lover peace of mind and to let her know that he misses her every day. Throughout the song, the singer's love for his partner is apparent, and the prayer is sung with genuine emotion and earnestness.

The song is popular for its gospel and soul-inspired sound, but it is also notable for its emotional depth and intimacy.

I think this is an underappreciated song in his collection.

Not only was it underrated, but many radio stations hardly played it. I had the Billy Joel Piano man cassette tape in 1974 and in 1975, I bought the Streetlife serenade album in cassette at the 32nd. st. Navy Exchange in late May, 1975. The San Diego Padres pregame & post game radio broadcasts played the tune Root Beer Rag.

Hell yea!!

Agreed. The only one I go back to from this album. Obviously, the title track is a classic, but this is a spunky little gem. Love it. I always listen at least one more time. At least. Always wanted the outro jam to last longer. When the arrangement finally builds up….damn, I could listen to the banjo and percussion and piano, etc for hours.

@The Witch King i have listened to it over many times. I am sure you have as well. I reason that not only does it sound like 'identify, ' it would make no sense for the pray'er to know where 'she' is. He is asking the Lord to notice where she is.

The Witch King

@Gregory Mahaits it's defintely a-find, identify would break the voice of the song
