Gadda Da Vidda doesn't have guitar power chords the same way which are a defining characteristic. It was heavily influential though, as was Hendrix, Steppenwolf, that Beatles song. Iommi lost the tip of his finger requiring him to have looser strings on his guitar and play the chords differently, needed distortion to cover up the flat tone, creating heavy metal. Everything else before was incidental.

I found a copy of this LP in a second-hand store way back in 1980. I was eighteen, and the cover looked like something from a Hammer horror film. The 'notes' within the gatefold were even more creepy - something about terrified, mute birds, a decapitated swan floating in a pond, and the chipped feet of statue of a saint 'whose only achievement was to die too soon.' Within thirty seconds of dropping the needle to the groove it had scared the crap out of me - my ears simply weren't prepared for it the constant rain, thunder, a tolling bell, and then that monstrous, down-tuned guitar riff...

Great song. One of the most creepy song I ever heard. One detail is that they ommited some verses that exists on the demo version, which were extremely creepy. Ozzy said to his father, "look, I made an album!", and his father listened to the album, which had thunders, bells, and that heavy sound, and his father looked at Ozzy and said "When you said you just drink beer, you were saying the truth?" hahah.
