While in high school and college Vernon founded the indie-rock bands Mount Vernon and DeYarmond Edison in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he still resides.

According to the For Emma Songfacts, after the break-up of De Yarmond Edison, Vernon retreated to his father's log cabin, out in the woods of north-east Wisconsin to hibernate for three snowy months. There he collected his thoughts and formulated them into a suite of songs, For Emma, Forever Ago . The album was originally self-released in late 2007 in a run of 500 copies and sold out instantly.

The album garnered critical acclaim, and was picked up by the indie-rock label Jagjaguwar, which gave the album a proper release on February 19th, 2008. The album was released in the UK and Europe by iconic indie 4AD on May 12, 2008.

When released in the UK, For Emma, Forever Ago received 5/5 and "Album of the Month" reviews in both MOJO and Uncut magazines. It is currently the third highest rated album of 2008 on review-aggregator site Metacritic, with accolades from publications including The Village Voice, The Hartford Courant and The A.V. Club.

The group's second album Bon Iver, Bon Iver was released on June 17, 2011 to universal acclaim. It was named by Pitchfork Media as the best album of 2011 on their annual list. At the 2012 Grammys, the album won Best Alternative Album and the group was awarded Best New Artist, despite having debuted in 2007.

Just when I thought I couldn't love them more or be more excited that I've got tickets for the show in Pittsburgh July 28th, they go and do this and prove me wrong.

This song speaks to me on a fundamental level, being raised Catholic my faith has declined or changed form as I've matured. Ive done my "believing seeing every time" and my faith has diverged from the "road id known as a child of God". My faith has moved away from blind faith as we can't "hold what faith provides". Faith provides promise of salvation, an afterlife, things we cannot physically experience. However, I don't believe I'm out of faith, my faith has evolved into regarding nature and the universe as a whole as my God, like Justin Vernon wrote in "Heavenly Father", "Ever since I heard the howling wind, I didn't need to go where a bible went". Bon Iver's music has given me validation in my attitude toward my faith, so, no Justin, you're not "dependent in what you're defending", I'm right with ya. It's time to be brave.

For me, so this album speaks to me because a few apps during lockdown I was heavily stressed and at a breaking point. Anxiety disorders and such. BUT, something told me to put this on my headphones and dance while the sun was coming up. I didn't know this at the time, but I believe that was the voice of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit leading me to that. And this music and album still evolves every time I listen to it. It's beautiful and a masterpiece. 🙏🙏

Hahah LUCKILY, and thankfully, God shows mercy and laughed in Love when the Holy Spirit guided me to dance. And turned the light on. Grace, Mercy, Love, and true Faith is real. It is not only in the Bible so you're all good! BUT I do highly recommend reading some scripture because that's when my faith REALLY bloomed.

@Aidan Lefeld Yeah, heavenly father plays into the wavering faith thing too. He goes back and forth if you look into the lyrics on 22 a million. And saying you're not a religious person by any means doesn't mean you have no faith whatsoever. A lot of people separate the concept of spirituality/faith from religion, meaning organized religion. Nick Cave recently made a statement about not considering himself religious, particularly because of certain religious people, which says to me that it's less about his own personal feelings towards God and belief, but more towards the stigma of organized religion being a manipulative politicized institution.

Or heard the lyrics to the song Heavenly Father? “I didn’t need to go where a bible went... even tho your gifts seemed heaven sent... all that he offers is a safety in the end.” I watched an interview today where he literally says “I’m not a religious person by any means.” Religious themes don’t mean you’re religious. It is about him once having religious faith, but the interview I watched today he said it’s about faith in the non-religious meaning, and how in the end faith can be blinding and unimportant, even tho he still has some left. And he is quite literally is an outspoken atheist who is very vocal about his political and religious views if you knew anything about him. He majored in religious studies in college, that explains a lot of the interest in religion.

@Aidan Lefeld Pretty much all of his songs that address Christian faith address it as wavering, which is something that people (like me) who might consider themselves Christians, deal with often. Some days you believe more, and some days you don't. People wrestle with their faith. Justin doesn't just not believe in God. The point of the song is that it's not so black and white, that it's something he's consistently thinking about and is unable to come to a conclusion about. Saying he's some outspoken atheist is reductive and plainly untrue.

@sledgehammer No, he's not saying that he has lost his religious faith. "There is no design" is not him saying God is not real. It's a feeling that occurs to him, much like all of the lines in this song. And why would the point be that he doesn't believe in God anymore if he ended the song on "we have to know that faith declines. I'm not all out of mine." Why would the song end on the line? The important thing, and the key to the song is that it's still there after all these struggles.

Everytime I come back to a Bon Iver song, there's that feel that makes me know it's gonna be overwhelming, not in a bad way. It's like a big journey you know you're gonna undertake. You know there's gonna be a lot of research in the sound design, and as a musician, I'll first question whether it's gonna be genuine, whether it's truly gonna come from the heart and not try to appear intelligent.

And though the cleverness is always there, with Bon Iver, it hits you right in the heart. You can hear sounds you've been familiar with over the previous albums, the love of the saxophones, the distinctive guitars, Justin's doubled voice and great vocal range, soothing low vocal notes and aerial falsetto. That sound is a sound that takes years to master. The perfect amount of control and of things left to chance. The clumsiness and vulnerability, playing effortlessly with the skills, the knowledge. I love that the abstract lyrics are spoken with such faith. That's what makes their music so great. That ability of making something clever and emotionally strong at the same time. I just love it.

Yesterday, I wrote the first verse for my new project (after staring at a blank screen for weeks) and one of the lines that came out was "What can be done to give a tongue to the coward, to speak aloud the troubles of Faith?" then this coming out the next day is such a beautiful and affirming synchronicity, which I can add to the list of magic that Bon Iver has contributed to my life.

Never associated previous two albums with a particul season. For Emma, on the other hand, was always my first pick for winter-ish mood. The upcoming album concludes the season cycle with Autumn, according to the description on the website, so this will be an interesting take on it and on the entire discography in general.
