It was released on December 6, 1999, by Jive Records , as the fourth single from the album. Before recording the song, Spears had to ask the writers of the song, Andreas Carlsson and Kristian Lundin, to re-write it, since it was a sexual song. The singer first recorded her vocals in March 1998, and re-recorded them later on the same year. The teen pop song, speaks of a relationship that a woman desires to correct, not quite understanding what went wrong, as she comes to realize that she was "born to make happy". It received mixed reviews from music critics, with some calling it an early classic, but an entirely unremarkable song.
"Born to Make You Happy" achieved commercial success, peaking inside the top-five in eleven countries. The lowest chart position for the single was in France, where it reached number nine. The song was certified Platinum by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in Sweden, for selling over 40,000 physical units of the single. It was also certified Gold by IFPI in Germany, Silver by the Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique (SNEP) in France and by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in the United Kingdom. An accompanying music video, directed by Billie Woodruff, portrays Spears dreaming that she is with her lover, while she sings and dances during the majority of the video.
Spears performed "Born to Make You Happy" on four concert tours. It was first performed on ...Baby One More Time Tour (1999), where Spears sang the song seated on a staircase, being later added to Crazy 2k Tour (2000), and Oops!... I Did It Again World Tour (2000), where the singer performed the song wearing pajamas and slippers. It was performed by the last time on Dream Within a Dream Tour (2000), where Spears emerged from the middle of a giant musical box as a ballerina to perform the song in a medley with "Lucky" and "Sometimes".
