It was released by London Records on 17 March 2003 and was primarily produced by Ian Masterson, Korpi & Blackcell, Neïmo, and Terry Ronald.
Her first album in six years, following 1997's Girl, it spawned four singles: the Riva collaboration "Who Do You Love Now?", "Put The Needle On It", "I Begin To Wonder", and "Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling". The songs achieved greatest success on the UK Singles Chart where they all reached the Top 10.
Neon Nights received a generally positive reception from music critics; some complimented its mix of pop sophistication, club culture and accessibility, but others criticised its 1980s retro sound for being too dated.
Lead single "Who Do You Love Now?" peaked at #3 on the UK Singles Chart, and reached #1 on the dance chart. The song is widely regarded as Minogue's comeback song. In Australia, the song peaked at #15, while in the United States the song was released to dance clubs, and reached #12 on the Billboard Dance Club chart.
Neon Nights became Minogue's most successful album release, and reached #8 in the United Kingdom, where it was certified Gold. In Australia the album was moderately successful, reaching #25 on the albums chart, but it was nominated for Best Pop Release at the 2003 ARIA Music Awards, making it Minogue's only ARIA nomination to date.
It was re-issued in November 2007 with a bonus disc of remixes and different artwork. In June 2018, to celebrate its 15th anniversary, the album was released on vinyl for the first time.
