Dexter Gordon Lyrics

Laura is the face in the misty lights.
Footsteps that you hear down the hall.
The love that floats on a summer night,
That you can never quite recall.

And you see Laura on a train that is passing through.
Those eyes how familiar they seem
She gave your very first kiss to you,
That was Laura but she's only a dream.

Maybe good to add that the song played is 'Laura'. The piano player is the great Hank Jones, with on bass Gene Ramey and on drums Gus Johnson. Arnett Cobb playes some background lines at the end of the tune.

Marc Haring

Biggest sax sound ever.

Trinus de Vries

Fabulous ! I love the moment in the out cadenza where Dexter is running out of keys on the horn (can't get any lower then Bflat) and Jones fills in the lowest tonic to complete the cadenza, Dexter smiles !

Marc Haring

I think you're right Trinus. Jazz musicians empathy I guess.

My God! The tone the sense of rhythm. The ability to tell an entire story with just a few notes. This is why I fell in love with DG 20 years ago in high school.

each note is a word, each sentence has a purpose, dexter takes you on a flying tour , follow the eagle high above all things. ---- he is a unique master at building his solo as a dramatic progression that never breaks until the very end. a genious !

Michael Thompson

Tunes are just tunes. But tunes played by creative artists become master pieces of sound. Dexter is !that artists .

Josh G-W

The fact that Arnett can even play backgrounds behind dex is a testament to Dexter's lyricism. He's playing the way he might behind a singer.

Again a great post from this famous tenor-battle of the North Sea Jazz Festival of 1979. The late Dexter is just great! Thanks again for posting. We want more!!!

Merci Dexter !!!
