Castle on the Hill
Ed Sheeran Lyrics

When I was six years old I broke my leg
I was running from my brother and his friends
And tasted the sweet perfume of the mountain grass I rolled down
I was younger then, take me back to when I

Found my heart and broke it here
Made friends and lost them through the years
And I've not seen the roaring fields in so long, I know I've grown
But I can't wait to go home

I'm on my way
Driving at ninety down those country lanes
Singing to "Tiny Dancer"
And I miss the way you make me feel, and it's real
We watched the sunset over the castle on the hill

Fifteen years old and smoking hand-rolled cigarettes
Running from the law through the backfields and getting drunk with my friends
Had my first kiss on a Friday night, I don't reckon that I did it right
But I was younger then, take me back to when

We found weekend jobs, when we got paid
We'd buy cheap spirits and drink them straight
Me and my friends have not thrown up in so long, oh how we've grown
But I can't wait to go home

I'm on my way
Driving at ninety down those country lanes
Singing to "Tiny Dancer"
And I miss the way you make me feel, and it's real
We watched the sunset over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill

One friend left to sell clothes
One works down by the coast
One had two kids but lives alone
One's brother overdosed
One's already on his second wife
One's just barely getting by
But these people raised me and I can't wait to go home

And I'm on my way, I still remember
These old country lanes
When we did not know the answers
And I miss the way you make me feel, it's real
We watched the sunset over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill

Dear Ed,

I am now 67 years old.
What fascinates me is that the painful awakening is repeated again and again for every generation.
It doesn't matter whether you're exploding with strength or if you are tired at the end of the path.
The images in your head are the same.
Nothing was better before in the early days and old people are not cut off from the circles of life.
I wish we... young and old could hug each other and dream our dreams together.
Whether skin is excitingly smooth, or whether wrinkles and furrows are a sign of age:
We are all human and whether our journey around our sun takes 16, 60 or 80 years is not important.
Empathy and feelings, understanding the young and the old is the secret.
Because in the end, the shared secret is what drives us forward as human beings.
So, be a little more forgiving... You old ones and you young ones...

we need each other
...and the world turns without us humans.
It is up to us.

Also, seit ein wenig "more forgiving"... Ihr Alten und ihr Jungen...

Wir brauchen einander
...und die Welt dreht sich auch ohne uns Menschen.
Es liegt an uns.

Ugh, this songs makes me cry every single time. Especialy the last part:

"One friend left to sell clothes
One works down by the coast
One had two kids but lives alone
One’s brother overdosed
Ones already on his second wife
Ones just barely getting by
But these people raised me
And I can’t wait to go home"

Because I know I am probably never going home, and I will probably never see them again. It really hurts.

I'm listening to this as a 16 year old about to turn 17 in 29 minutes. I decided I would listen to a few songs before turning 17 as I will never be 16 again. This is officially the last song I'll listen to at 16 and plan to come back at 17 before I turn 18. :') 💗 -Rose

Edit 2023: Hello there, guys.
17 year old me turning 18 in 15 minutes here.

I didn't expect this comment to get as many likes and replies as it did. Thank you all for the kind birthday messages and advice you gave to 17 year old me.I followed a ton of your advice and 17 wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. It was stressful, but it wasn't as much as a hugh jump as I thought it was going to be. Time flies, but I'm enjoying my youth while I'm still young.

I'm nervous to graduate this year (2023) in a few months, but I think it will all work out.

I know I'm just a stranger on the internet, but I Love all you guys and I'll try to keep the same advice I got for 17 while I'm 18.

I guess that's it for now. I'll come back here and listen to this song when I am 18 a few minutes from turning 19. Thank you again. - Rose 💗

This song is for my son. It tells of his growing up with his friends at the same time as Ed, 30 miles away from where Ed did. We lost him through drugs and severe mental illness. But he lived that beautiful experience, growing up in rural East anglia, doing the same crazy stuff. Ed tells a story of many young people but the endings are different.

I'm sorry for your son, unfortunately we are losing our young people to drugs!
It would be good for all parents to have one faith, one path to follow and not forsake their children even for a second, just like the animals that take care of their young until adulthood!
do not lose hope, one day you will see your son, trust in GOD. look for it can comfort your heart

Your son is at peace my friend and he lived a good early life. I hope you can find peace in that ❤️
