For I don't love you anymore.
To waste our lives would be a sin,
Release me and let me love again.
I have found a new love, dear,
And I will always want her near.
Her lips are warm while yours are cold
Release me, my darling, let me go.
(Please release me, let me go)
For I don't love you anymore.
(To waste our lives would be a sin)
So release me and let me love again.
Please release me, can't you see?
You'd be a fool to cling to me.
To live our lives would bring us pain
So release me and let me love again.
(Let me go, let me go)
"Please Release Me" is a heartfelt ballad by Engelbert Humperdinck about a man imploring his lover to let him go because he no longer loves her. The song opens with the plea, "Please release me, let me go, for I don't love you anymore." It's a classic case of a relationship gone wrong, and the man feels trapped and miserable. He knows that staying in the relationship would be a mistake and a waste of their lives.
As the song progresses, the man reveals that he has found a new love, one that he will always want near. The contrast between the warmth of his new love's lips and the coldness of his current lover's emphasizes the quality of his newfound romance. He understands that he needs to be released from his current entanglement to start anew.
Throughout the song, the man pleads with his lover to release him, even though he knows it will be painful. The refrain underscores his desperation: "Please release me, can't you see? You'd be a fool to cling to me. To live our lives would bring us pain, so release me and let me love again." He believes that it's better to rip off the bandaid and start fresh than to cling to the past and suffer.
Overall, "Please Release Me" by Engelbert Humperdinck is a powerful song that captures the pain of a relationship gone sour. Despite the melancholic tone, the song is ultimately about moving on and embracing change for the better.
