Our love was once exciting
Now it's just a game we play.
Too bad, too bad
But nothing lasts forever
All at once
We lost our way.
Hello, goodbye
And suddenly it's over
And there's nothing we can do.
Dommage, Dommage
But may your next attempt at love
Come true
Hello, goodby
And suddenly it's over
And there's nothing we can do.
Dommage Dommage
Too bad we couldn't
Make our dreams come true.
The lyrics of Engelbert Humperdinck's "Dommage Dommage" communicate the bittersweet reality of a love that has fizzled out. The singer does not deny that the love they shared was exciting at one point, but laments that it has turned into a game they play. The use of the French word "dommage" (which translates to "too bad" or "what a pity") underscores the sentiment of regret and disappointment that permeates the song. The singer acknowledges that nothing lasts forever, and at some point, they lost their way. The abruptness with which the relationship ended is also conveyed in the lines "Hello, goodbye/And suddenly it's over/And there's nothing we can do." The final lines, "Dommage, Dommage/But may your next attempt at love/Come true," suggest a message of goodwill and hope for the future, even as the singer comes to terms with the end of this particular love story.
