No Reason to Cry was released in CD format on October 25, 1990. The album is notable for containing a duet with Bob Dylan on his otherwise unreleased song "Sign Language".
When he gave a speech inducting the Band into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Eric Clapton said that after he heard their debut album, Music from Big Pink, he wanted to join the group, the fact that they already had a guitarist in Robbie Robertson notwithstanding. In the winter of 1975-1976, when he cut No Reason to Cry at the Band's Shangri-La Studio in Malibu, California, he came as close as he ever would to realizing that desire. Clapton is a musical chameleon; though some of No Reason to Cry is identifiable as the kind of pop/rock Clapton had been making since the start of his solo career (the best of it being "Hello Old Friend," which became his first Top 40 single in two years), the most memorable music on the album occurs when Clapton is collaborating with members of the Band and other guests. He duets with Band bassist Rick Danko on Danko's "All Our Past Times," and with Bob Dylan on Dylan's "Sign Language," as Robertson's distinctive lead guitar is heard rather than Clapton's. As a result, the album is a good purchase for fans of Bob Dylan and the Band, but not necessarily for those of Eric Clapton.

Last night, I lost the best friend I ever had
Oh yeah, last night, I lost the best friend I ever had
She is gone away and left me
Left me makes me feel so bad
It is early in the morning and my
Early in the morning and my love is coming down to you
I will love you, love you, baby, until I do not know what to do
Musical Interlude
Last night, I lost the best friend I ever had
Last night, I lost the best friend I ever had
Now you gone away and left me
That makes me feel so bad

Eric Clapton - Black Summer Rain - Lyrics - From the Album - 1976 - Eric Clapton - No Reason To Cry
Where is the sun
The sun that used to shine on me
Where has it gone
Or is it just a memory
I looked through the window
Staring at the sky
Waiting for a moment
Always passed me by
Black summer rain
Black summer rain
Black summer rain is falling on me, girl
Where is the love?
The love I need to set me free
And how can I escape
This gloom that is swallowing me
Black summer rain
Black summer rain
Black summer rain is falling on me, girl
Black summer rain
Black summer rain
Black summer rain is falling on me, girl

Eric Clapton - Hungry - Lyrics - From the Album - 1976 - Eric Clapton - No Reason To Cry
Last night as I stepped into the stage lights
I heard the people cry when they saw my face
There is nothing like our hearts beating in time
The crowd may inspire, but you give me my strength
Oh, hungry, I am hungry, I am hungry
For your sweet smile
Lonely, I am lonely, I am lonely
I need to hold you for a while
I have been slipping into desperation
You are the only salvation that the Lord designed
Your absence is controlling my defences
My life is senseless without you by my side
Oh, hungry, I am hungry, I am hungry
For your sweet smile
Lonely, I am lonely, I am lonely
I need to hold you for a while
Musical Interlude
Oh, hungry, I am hungry, I am hungry
For your sweet smile
Lonely, I am lonely, I am lonely
I need to hold you for a while
Loose ladies on the road will drive you crazy
Every no becomes a maybe, it never takes too long
Missing you, I don’t know what I am going to do
You do not know what I am going through, everything seems wrong
Oh, hungry, I am hungry, I am hungry
For your sweet smile
Lonely, I am lonely, I am lonely
I need to hold you for a while

Eric Clapton - Innocent Times - Lyrics - From the Album - 1976 - Eric Clapton - No Reason To Cry
I was a child born so free
It seems that time has put age on me
And when I grow old, will I once again find
All of those sweet, innocent times
I was a child born without fear
It seems that time has placed me here
With no freedom to laugh, there is more reason to cry
I really miss those innocent times
I used to feel joy in my soul
But now my sorrow has taken control
As I look around I pray, Lord be kind
Just one more taste of those innocent times
Musical Interlude
As I look around I pray, Lord be kind
Just one more taste of those innocent times
Just one more taste of those innocent times

Eric Clapton - Double Trouble - Lyrics - From the Album - 1976 - Eric Clapton - No Reason To Cry
Lay awake at night
Oh so low, just so troubled
Can’t get a job
Laid off and I am having double trouble
Hey hey, to make you have got to try
Baby, that’s no lie
Some of this generation of millionaires
I can’t even keep decent clothes to wear
Musical Interlude
Laugh at me walking
And I have no place to go
Bad luck and troubles has taken me
Have no money to show
Hey hey, to make you have got to try
Baby, that’s no lie
Some of this generation is millionaires is
I can’t even keep decent clothes to wear
Musical Interlude

Eric Clapton - Hello Old Friend - Lyrics - From the Album - 1976 - Eric Clapton - No Reason To Cry
As I am strolling down the garden path
I saw a flower glowing in the dark
It looked so pretty and it was unique
I had to bend down just to have a peek
Hello, old friend
It is really good to see you once again
Hello, old friend
It is really good to see you once again
I saw you walking underneath the stars
I could not stop cause I was in a car
I am sure the distance would not be too far
If I got out and walked to where you are
Hello, old friend
It is really good to see you once again
Hello, old friend
It is really good to see you once again
Musical Interlude
An old man passed me on the street today
I thought I knew him but I couldn’t say
I stopped to think if I could place his frame
When he tipped his hat I knew his name
Hello, old friend
It is really good to see you once again
Hello, old friend
It is really good to see you once again
Musical Interlude
Hello, old friend
It is really good to see you once again
Hello, old friend
It is really good to see you once again

Eric Clapton - All Our Past Times - Lyrics - From the Album - 1976 - Eric Clapton - No Reason To Cry
I don’t want to be the one to say I am sorry
I don’t want to be the one to take the blame
I don’t want to be the one to throw it over
I don’t want to be the one to feel ashamed
I don’t want to be the one who thinks of nothing
I don’t want to be the one to tell you what you have seen
After all this time, well I thought that you were mine
I just want to be the one who would share this dream
All our past times should be forgotten
All our past times should be erased
I don’t care how much it costs
I don’t count the loss
As long as I can see your face again
Musical Interlude
You don’t have to tell me when you are leaving
If it is half past one, if it is maybe four
It makes no difference where you think you are going
But please remember not to slam the door
All our past times should be forgotten
All our past times should be erased
Well I don’t care how much it costs
Cause I don’t count the loss
As long as I can see your face again
Yes, I don’t care how much it costs
You know I don’t count the loss
As long as I can see your face again

Eric Clapton - County Jail Blues - Lyrics - From the Album - 1976 - Eric Clapton - No Reason To Cry
They picked me up
Put me in the county jail
They picked me up
Put me in the county jail
They would not let my woman
Come and post my bail
Now I am in prison
Almost done my time
Now I am in prison
I have almost done my time
They gave me six months
Had to work out nine
I know my baby
She is going to jump and shout
I know my baby
She is going to jump and shout
When the train comes in
And I come walking out
Musical Interlude
Take these stripes around me
Chains around my legs
Take these stripes around me
Chains around my legs
The stripes don’t hurt me
The chains could kill me dead

Eric Clapton - Sign Language - Lyrics - From the Album - 1976 - Eric Clapton - No Reason To Cry
You speak to me in sign language
As I am eating a sandwich in a small cafe
At a quarter to three
But I cannot respond to your sign language
You are taking advantage, bringing me down
Can't you make any sound?
It was there by the bakery, surrounded by fakery
This is my story, still I am still there
Does she know I still care?
Musical Interlude
Link Wray was playing on a jukebox, I was paying
For the words I was saying, so misunderstood
He did not do me no good
You speak to me in sign language
As I am eating a sandwich in a small cafe
At a quarter to three
But I can’t respond to your sign language
You are taking advantage, bringing me down
Can't you make any sound?

Eric Clapton - Carnival - Lyrics - From the Album - 1976 - Eric Clapton - No Reason To Cry
Come with me, come with me
To the carnival, to the carnival
You will see, you will see
You will see, you will see
What you want to see, exactly what you want to be
At the carnival, at the carnival, at the carnival
Musical Interlude
Come with me, come with me
To the carnival, to the carnival
Musical Interlude
Come with me, come with me
Come with me, come with me
