Shore was recorded before and during quarantine in Hudson (NY), Paris, Los Angeles, Long Island City and New York City from September 2018 until September 2020 with the help of recording and production engineer Beatriz Artola.The fifteen song, fifty-five minute Shore was initially inspired by frontman Robin Pecknold’s musical heroes such as Arthur Russell, Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guebrou and more who, in his experience, celebrated life in the face of death. “I see “shore” as a place of safety on the edge of something uncertain, staring at Whitman’s waves reciting ‘death,’” commented Pecknold. “Tempted by the adventure of the unknown at the same time you are relishing the comfort of the stable ground beneath you. This was the mindset I found, the fuel I found, for making this album.”

Since the unexpected success of the first Fleet Foxes album over a decade ago, I have spent more time than I’m happy to admit in a state of constant worry and anxiety. Worried about what I should make, how it will be received, worried about the moves of other artists, my place amongst them, worried about my singing voice and mental health on long tours. I’ve never let myself enjoy this process as much as I could, or as much as I should. I’ve been so lucky in so many ways in my life, so lucky to be born with the seeds of the talents I have cultivated and lucky to have had so many unreal experiences. Maybe with luck can come guilt sometimes. I know I’ve welcomed hardship wherever I could find it, real or imagined, as a way of subconsciously tempering all this unreal luck I’ve had. By February 2020, I was again consumed with worry and anxiety over this album and how I would finish it. But since March, with a pandemic spiraling out of control, living in a failed state, watching and participating in a rash of protests and marches against systemic injustice, most of my anxiety around the album disappeared. It just came to seem so small in comparison to what we were all experiencing together. In its place came a gratitude, a joy at having the time and resources to devote to making sound, and a different perspective on how important or not this music was in the grand scheme of things. Music is both the most inessential and the most essential thing. We don’t need music to live, but I couldn’t imagine life without it. It became a great gift to no longer carry any worry or anxiety around the album, in light of everything that is going on. A tour may not happen for a year, music careers may not be what they once were. So it may be, but music remains essential. This reframing was another stroke of unexpected luck I have been the undeserving recipient of. I was able to take the wheel completely and see the album through much better than I had imagined it, with help from so many incredible collaborators, safe and lucky in a new frame of mind.

Can’t understand the lyrics very well though, kind of a muffled recording. Song sounds like a cross between Phil Collins meets Pink Floyd...but a bit too drenched in reverb.

Okay, crazy theory, but hear me out.I think this unbelievably beautiful song was inspired by Zelda - breath of the wild. I present my proof:
1. The chord progression really reminds me of the dragon roost island theme

ash hartling I made my comments having just caught wind of their being new music released by Fleet Foxes, at which point I’d listened to maybe 3 songs. I was speaking candidly on how his writing makes me feel at this point, having been a fan for years, seeing them live, being inspired by their sound etc. I’m not out here trying to shit on one of my favourite artists just to be contrarian and sound edgy. To address some of what you’ve put forth here, I have a few thoughts of my own.

If you know that it’s out of the artists hands how their work is received by their audience, then there are no if-ands-or-buts about it. My job is not to please an artist by interpreting their work to their liking, my role is just enjoying the music. Whatever sense of it I get, however jaded a person I may be or genuine, my take on it is fair game. You may think it’s a crap take on the music but I may think your take is crap and in an informal situation such as this, neither of us is more correct than the other. Even calling my comments an analysis is framing it as some writing assignment, it was just my opinion made after a long day. If there is a way that my opinion could be deemed wrong, if that’s the case I’ll find out soon enough and I’ll own up to it, no big deal. If I end up loving this whole record I’ll be on here chatting with people about my favourite moments. So ya! I’m pretty tired of being interpreted in a disparaging way so I’m over this back and forth game. Enjoy music and keep supporting the little guys 👍✌️

@Reiki Share I know it's out of the artists' hands... but it's then in your hands to not completely misinterpret. Like I wouldn't go around saying Hemingway's work is full of flowery metaphors and page-long rants because it just isn't, in any way.
I get that this was your first impression, I just think that you're way off in your analysis, it genuinely feels like you listened to what everyone else was listening to, heard their opinions and the thoughts of Robin Pecknold and made an effort to contradict the original work ahaha. I just think it's strange to call a song overly self conscious when it's literally the opposite when compared to Fleet Foxes' other work... But hey, I hope you enjoy the whole album. It's definitely my favourite of 2020.

Any uncertainty was cleared up there but at the risk of repeating myself, I was speaking from a place of not listening to the record in its entirety (this is a post for one song) and was speaking from my first impressions from what I did hear of it. If you or the group ‘us’ you speak of don’t enjoy what I said you are in every way free to do that but don’t leave out key information and play dumb. Once art is out of the hands of the artist they don’t have a final say in the experience the listener has. And so in this case your interpretation or a group’s interpretation is not what decides what music means for me.

@Reiki Share I'm really not sure what you're talking about... This is literally the most direct Robin Pecknold has ever been on an album and I'm very much into it. It's also literally the opposite of 'self conscious'. He has mentioned in interviews recently that he wanted to get away from the solipsism of some of his earlier music, this album is far more universal. I really think this is a strange take. Name dropping? He's giving thanks to artists that have inspired him... How can that be either dated or gimmicky? It's pure and earnest... Honestly feels like you're listening to a completely different album to the rest of us.

@Alex Johnson You're assuming a lot about me based on this one reply to a comment. I thought I was pretty fair and transparent. I said I hadn't listened to the whole record and I admire attempts at creating timeless art. Since, in my humble opinion, Robin Pecknold is one of the better song writers and vocalists of the last couple decades, I think he truly has achieved that. To play your game, it comes across presumptuous to give backhanded advice like that. Your advice may be valid but when you deliver it that way, it's catty and mean.

You're right, artists aren't obligated to do anything in particular, I'm an artist and I understand how that game works. If they were obligated they wouldn't be artists but rather extras in the background. It's up to them how they choose to frame their stories or what they wish to focus on. I'm speaking for myself as a listener and I'm in no way claiming dictatorship over artists but rather speaking more of my taste, of what gets me into music when it comes to lyrics. After a few weeks of listening I'll probably look back at my comment and think, "Wow! I wouldn't stand behind any of what I said or how I said it," but that's how first impressions work, they can take you around the scenic route to liking something. And hey! You've probably listened to this record more than me so, I'm curious to hear the story it tells.
