Dog Days Are Over
Florence + the Machine Lyrics

Happiness, hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with a drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming so you better run

Run fast for your mother run fast for your father
Run for your children for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind you
Can't carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can't you hear the horses
'Cause here they come

And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had
And what was left after that too, oh

Happiness hit her like a bullet in the back
Struck from a great height
By someone who should know better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses
'Cause here they come

Run fast for your mother and fast for your father
Run for your children for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your loving behind you
Can't carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses
'Cause here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses
'Cause here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run

LYRICS:
Happiness hit her, like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with a drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father

Run for your children, run for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You can't carry it with you if you want to survive
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can't you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come

And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had
And what was left after that too, oh

Happiness hit her like a bullet in the back...
Struck from a great height
By someone who should have known better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You can't carry it with you if you want to survive
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come

The dog days are over

The dog days are gone
Can you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come
The dog days are over
The dog days are gone
Can you hear the horses?
'Cause here they come

About a year ago in lockdown, I started feeling really down all the time. It just got worse in the winter, where I was at I think the worst few months in my life. I couldn’t be happy, it was a strain to smile, a couple of times I found myself with one foot up on my window ledge, seriously considering jumping out.

I’d always loved FATM’s music, but it was around this point I really started listening to them, and I honestly don’t know how, but I think it was this that got me through, particularly the songs Shake It Out, Delilah and Never Let Me Go.

And a few weeks ago, I was sitting on my window ledge, watching the sun set, when for some reason Shake It Out started playing in my head. And it was at that moment when I think I just felt a weight fall off my shoulders, and I just thought, “wow, I’m happy now, I’m free.”

I can’t explain it, and I’m not entirely sure what happened then, but it was honestly the best feeling in the world in that moment. And whatever did go on in my head then, I think Florence’s music played a part in it.

So even though they probably won’t see this, I just want to thank her and the band for helping me through my Dog Days, I think it is quite possible that I owe them my life.

Also, I’ve been reading through the comments, and I just wanna say that I am so proud of every single person here, you are all incredible!

This song always reminds me of how much my parents do for me, and I always think of little things I’ve done that were rude, and I cry thinking about the fact that I’ll never be able to take those things back. So random, but I don’t want my parents to pass away thinking that I didn’t appreciate them 😭. I swear to god I am in tears every time I listen to it, even writing this comment right now I’m crying, sorry for being so emotional rn 😫.

This became my anthem after escaping a 13 years long abusive marriage that ended in my neck being broken. This song reminds me the night I ran from him for my life.
'Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father, run for you children, for your sister, & your brother. Leave all your loving & longing behind, you cant carry it with you if you want to survive. The dog days are over, the dog days are done'
