The longest-lived incarnation of the act featured Gladys Knight on lead vocals alongside backup singers 'The Pips', which included her brother Merald "Bubba" Knight as well as their cousins Edward Patten and William Guest.
Gladys Knight, born on May 28, 1944, developed her singing style while singing with her family at Baptist church functions. Though the group first released recordings in 1958, their career really got started when Motown founder Berry Gordy witnessed them perform at Harlem’s Apollo Theater in 1966 and felt very impressed. With a career following spanning decade after decade, featuring many hits, the group has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

Midnight Train to Georgia
Gladys Knight & The Pips Lyrics
L.A. proved too much for the man
(Too much for the man, he couldn't make it)
So he's leavin' the life he's come to know, ooh
(He said he's goin')
He said he's goin' back to find
(Goin' back to find)
Ooh ooh ooh, what's left of his world
The world he left behind
Not so long ago
He's leavin' (leavin')
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leavin' on the midnight train)
Yeah, said he's goin' back
(Goin' back to find)
To a simpler place in time
(Whenever he takes that ride) oh yes he is
(Guess who's gonna be right by his side)
And I'll be with him (I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leavin' on the midnight train to Georgia)
I'd rather live in his world (live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(Her world is his, his and hers alone)
He kept dreamin' (dreamin')
Ooh, that someday he'd be a star
(A superstar, but he didn't get far)
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don't always come true
(Dreams don't always come true) oh no
(Uh uh) uh uh (no, uh uh)
So he pawned all his hopes (ooh ooh ooh)
And he even sold his old car (woo woo woo)
Bought a one way ticket back
To the life he once knew
Oh, yes, he did
He said he would
Oh, oh, he's leavin' (leavin')
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leavin' on the midnight train)
Yeah, said he's goin' back to find
(Goin' back to find)
Ooh, a simpler place in time
(Whenever he takes that ride) ooh
(Guess who's gonna be right by his side)
And I'm gonna be with him (I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leavin' on the midnight train to Georgia)
I'd rather live in his world (live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(Her world is his, his and hers alone)
Oh, he's leavin' (leavin')
On the midnight train to Georgia
(Leavin' on the midnight train)
Yeah, ooh, y'all
Said he's goin' back to find
(Goin' back to find)
Ooh, a simpler place in time
(Whenever he takes that ride) ooh
(Guess who's gonna be right by his side)
And I've got to be with him (I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leavin' on the midnight train to Georgia, ooh ooh)
I'd rather live in his world (live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(Her world is his, his and hers alone)
(For love) for love (gonna board) gonna board
The midnight train to ride
For love (for love) gonna board (gonna board)
Gotta board the midnight train to go
For love (for love) gonna board (gonna board)
The midnight train to go
My world (for love), his world (gonna board)
Our world (the midnight train to go) now I'm his alone
My world (for love), his world (gonna board)
Our world (the midnight train to go) now I'm his alone
I've got to go (for love), I've got to go (gonna board)
I've got to go (the midnight train to go) hey
I've got to go (for love), I've got to go (gonna board)
(The midnight train to go)
My world (for love), his world (gonna board)
My man (the midnight train to go) his girl
I've got to go (for love), I've got to go (gonna board)
(The midnight train to go) I've got to go
My world (for love), his world (gonna board)
Our world

Why can't music be this pure, innocent and still convey every emotion, every sentiment, every feeling anymore?
Craig Simons
I agree. It’s a beautiful art which is slipping by us.
Too many songs today have so much hate and anger in them.
M Lane
@ogrebattle22763 and I blame parenting; somewhere parenting went wrong along the way. People of these times writing about WAP and such. I remember somewhere back in the day Vice President Gore's wife, Tipor Gore, was trying to alert society on the language used in music made avail to our children...like I said, parenting went wrong a long time ago, and it's only gotten worse to the degree of soft porn visualized in music videos. Gone are the days of elegant, beautiful women in beautiful gowns singing songs of "Baby Love" and "Be My Baby" to chicks sprawling around in g-strings in music videos all over the floor, it is just sad, and there's no hope.

You cannot go backward that's why it is so good to hear these song again today in 2022. It was a different time, Vietnam, civil rights, college protests, the songs were the experiences the singers was expressing.
Glen Masango

My parents would play this song on the record player during our Saturday morning chores when I was a kid in the 70’s. We lived in New Jersey then. Now I live in Georgia. 😎
