The band was founded in the year 2003 by Ólafur Tómas Guðbjartsson (guitar/lead vocals) and Haraldur Guðmundsson (doublebass/vocals) and started out as a “two man show“ traveling through Iceland.
In 2005 the duo developed into a quartet with Thorbjörn Thor (drums) and Harpa Thorvaldsdottir (Piano/vocals). As such Groundfloor decided to record material for their first CD.
With no record label, the production of the CD was complicated, but three years later Groundfloor released their first studio album “Bones“. In 2008, both Ólafur and Haraldur had moved abroad. With Ólafur living in Denmark and Haraldur in Austria, the cooperation within the band was uncertain. As “Bones” was released, in November 2008, they decided to put it into distribution in Iceland and Austria.
Due to the Austrian people taking the music of Groundfloor with open arms, the band decided to present their music in Austria, Germany and Italy in the summer of 2009. With altered line up, Thorvaldur Thorvaldsson (drums/vocals) and Julia Cerniawska (violin), Groundfloor had a very successful tour and upon return to Salzburg they deceided on going into the studio, to record for their second album. The recordings were done in August 2009 and February 2010. In January 2011 Groundfloor´s second album “...This is What’s Left of It“ was released.
The album was recorded at Sonic Flow studios in Salzburg and was mixed by Sigurdór Guðmundsson a.k.a. Skonrokk (http://www.last.fm/user/Skonrokk) in Iceland.
