Hozier was born in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. His mother is the visual artist Raine Hozier-Byrne (who also designed his latest album cover). He began a degree in music at Trinity College, Dublin, but dropped out midway through his first year in order to record demos for Universal Music. While at Trinity, he became involved with the Trinity Orchestra. He was a member of Anúna from 2008 to 2012, and appears as a soloist on their 2012 release "Illumination" singing "La Chanson de Mardi Gras". He toured and sang with the group internationally including performances in Norway and the Netherlands.
In 2013, Hozier released the EP "Take Me to Church EP" (also containing "Like Real People Do", "Angel of Small Death and The Codeine Scene" and a live version of "Cherry Wine"), with the title track becoming his breakthrough single after it went viral on YouTube. It reached number one on the Irish iTunes singles chart and number two in the official chart on 25 October 2013.
Hozier followed up Take Me to Church with the new EP "From Eden EP" (also containing "Work Song", "Arsonist's Lullabye" and a live version of "To Be Alone"), and a number of festival tour dates and television appearances in the United States. Hozier released his self-titled album, "Hozier" on 19 September 2014. It had five singles including "Take Me to Church", "Work Song", and "From Eden", which were hits on his earlier EPs. On December 2014, it was announced that "Take Me to Church" was nominated at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for Song of the Year in 2015.
In March 2019 he released Wasteland, Baby!. Sam Sodomsky's review in Pitchfork notes that "He’s got a gorgeous voice. Booming and effervescent, it’s an instrument that communicates passion, adventure, and wisdom," but also noted that the length of the album (14 tracks) became "humdrum."

@Esther Ninsiima --
and I quote: "i'm fine with an artist playing a nasty character - this video doesn't make me conclude hozier is vile."
Hozier chose or agreed to create this video. I wrote a play where i was on the verge of killing my mom. It got picked up and played at various conferences on caregiving including at the Royal Alberta Museum. (My character was also very playful, much/most of the time, while being sole caregiver for someone with dementia for years and years, but the challenges almost made my character kill.)
I love nine inch nails' the downward spiral. My beloved and I love the TV series "You" about a psychopath. My distaste for this Hozier video is not because I'm lily-livered, but because to me the video fails as art. Great cinematography and costumes and all that, but the narrative of abuse abuse abuse did not seem sophisticated to me.
Is it in any way insightful?
Is it provocative in any good way?
(I'm asking sincerely, not rhetorically? I'm open to changing my mind.)
We could say that a few-minute video does not give enough time to provide a change of perspective or something of meaning - but is that true?
Compare Joyner Lucas' "I'm Not Racist". Similar to dinner & diatribes, seated at a table, with actual diatribes - smart diatribes; insightful.
Compare Skrillex' "First of the Year". At one level it's even more disturbing than Hozier vs Anya: creepy pedophile vs little girl. But the girl is never sexualized and before long she kicks ass. In this Hozier video Anya's character is repeatedly exploited and controlled. If her character was enjoying being sexualized, well there's nothing wrong with women enjoying exploring variations in sexuality, but until she flips the script we see almost-only exploitation. She's not living out some forbidden fantasy. Her flip of the script is nothing great either (yay more violence).
(Anya is obviously a powerful actor now (won Golden Globe). Was she when this video was recorded? (Before filming the Queen's Gambit.) Perhaps. (Anya, if you read this(!), I'd love to know what you thought about this video and why you did it.))
Compare Elliott Moss' Without the Lights. Brilliant dancing. Trigger warning. Awesome.
I know I'm going way over the top in my reply. I guess I'm inspired - I love these other works.
Lady Gaga's Bad Romance (not one of my favorites) has similarities: it's a bad "romance"; she burns her captor alive. We don't see her forcibly restrained in the same way we do here.
Awesome non-music videos that play with perspective:
-- "I love two people" (2 min)
youtu.be/wBbApbVjoto
-- "Tuck Me In" (1 minute)
youtu.be/Bd6iqpufdMY
-- Neighbours (1952, NFB, 8 minutes) youtu.be/e_aSowDUUaY
If anyone reads this and thinks of other videos worth mentioning, please do.
Based only on Take Me to Church, I loved Hozier. Less so now. I'd be grateful if anyone expands my perception.

OKAY, SO HERE'S THE LYRICS
Honey, this club here is stuck up
Dinner and diatribes
I knew it from the first look of
The look of mischief in your eyes
Your friends are a fate that befell me
Head is the talking type
I'd suffer Hell if you'd tell me
What you'd do to me tonight
Tell me
Tell me
Tell me, ah
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
Honey, I laugh when it sinks in
A pillar I am of pride
Scarcely can speak for my thinking
What you'd do to me tonight
Now that the evening is slowing
Now that the end is in sight
Honey, it's easier knowing
What you'd do to me tonight
Tell me
Tell me
Tell your man
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
That's the kind of love
That's the kind of love
That's the kind of love
That's the kind of love
Ohh
Let there be hotels complaints and grievances raised
In that kind of love
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
Ohh
Let there be damage ensued and tabloid news
In that kind of love
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
That's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of, ah
Oh
And that's the kind of love
I've been dreaming of
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
(That's the kind of love)
And that's the kind of love

(That's the kind of love)

Here's my take/one of the possible interpretations:
I think the video is about abuse. And about the cycle of abuse.
Lighting someone on fire is, in my opinion, supposed to represent getting out of an abusive relationship, but becoming abusive/evil yourself in the process. It's a cycle of abuse - people hurt you, you destroy them, you hurt other people, etc. (If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes in you).
In the beginning, we see him eating a marshmallow he presumably roasted on someone else. His teeth are already black, which means that that isn't the first marshmallow he ate. I think that it's implied here that he was abused by some people in the past and he "freed" himself of them by destroying them - which resulted in him becoming an abuser/evil person. But after that, he doesn't move during the whole video - he's stuck in the cycle of abuse. And he's smiling all the time, as if he didn't notice the fire, as if the fire was a normal occurrence (as if abusive behavior was normal, or something that makes him smile).
And there there's Anya, who's drawn in by him. She wants to escape, but she can't. She's trying to set him on fire. He doesn't let her leave. She's inexplicably drawn to him. I think that's supposed to represent a toxic relationship. The other guests do nothing. The servants (also people abused in some way?) either help the abuser (Hozier's character) or try to help Anya's character.
In the end, she's helped by another woman (she's given the matches) and she succeeds in lighting him on fire. She destroys him, and cements her "place" in the cycle of abuse. She's become the toxic person now, stuck in a cycle she cannot break out of. Another person, presumably someone abused or treated wrongly, tries to light her on fire. We don't see Anya's character treating the servant wrongly, but he sees her set him on fire - hurt someone - which gives him a motive to destroy the abuser that Anya's character became.
But hey, that's just my take.
