The group, managed by Off the Record Entertainment, was composed of twelve members: Woollim Entertainment's Kwon Eunbi (권은비), HKT48's Miyawaki Sakura (宮脇 咲良), 8D Entertainment's Kang Hyewon (강혜원), Yuehua Entertainment's Choi Yena (최예나) , WM Entertainment's Lee Chaeyeon (이채연), Woollim Entertainment's Kim Chaewon (김채원), Urban Works Entertainment's Kim Minju (김민주), HKT48's Yabuki Nako (矢吹 奈子), AKB48's Honda Hitomi (本田 仁美), Stone Music Entertainment's Jo Yuri (조유리), Starship Entertainment's An Yujin (안유진), and Starship Entertainment's Jang Wonyoung (장원영).
IZ*ONE debuted on October 29, 2018 with their first extended play COLOR*IZ. Upon its release, the group received immediate commercial success, selling over 225,000 units and peaking at number 2 on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart. In addition, both the EP and its lead single "La Vie en Rose" charted on Billboard World Albums and World Digital Songs respectively. The early success subsequently hailed them as the New Artist of the Year at several awards shows, including Golden Disc Awards and Seoul Music Awards.
The group's Japanese debut single, "好きと言わせたい (Suki to Iwasetai)", was released on February 6, 2019 under UMG's EMI Records label. Peaking at number 2 on Oricon Singles Chart and with over 250,000 unit sales, the single was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ). On April 1, 2019, the group released their second EP HEART*IZ, with "Violeta" serving as the album's lead single. The album sold over 282,000 copies and continued the success of their debut.
The group was set to release their first studio album, Album page: BLOOM*IZ, on November 11, 2019. However, the release was postponed due to the Mnet vote manipulation investigation. Investigations had revealed that all twelve members of IZ*ONE were selected before the finale of Produce 48. As a result, their showcases, promotions, and several guest appearances were cancelled or put on hold. On January 6, 2020, the members' agencies and CJ ENM reached an agreement to resume the group's activities.
Eventually, BLOOM*IZ was released on February 17, 2020. The album became the best selling girl group album in Gaon Chart history with 480,000 sales as of April 2020. The lead single "Fiesta" was also a great success, becoming their biggest hit to date and peaking at #3 in Korea.
On March 10, 2021, Mnet confirmed that IZ*ONE would be disbanding as planned after the expiration of their contract at the end of April of the same year.
