If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody
James Ray Lyrics

If you gotta make a fool of somebody
If you gotta make a fool of someone
Do you really gotta hurt me
I'm the one thatll worry, about you

If you gotta make a fool of somebody
If you gotta make a fool of someone
Do you really gotta hurt me
I am the one thatll love you, always true

Daytime or nightime, anytime at all
I'll rush to your side anytime you call
Just to be near you, you know
Anywhere I'll go
How could you hurt me so... Oh

If you gotta make a fool of somebody
If you gotta make a fool of someone
Do you really gotta hurt me
I'm the one thatll worry, about you

Take it easy baby
Please don't hurt me

I was 15, hanging out with some black guys who had access to the PX on their forces base. One of them bought this record which had just come out. I could not believe how great it was: my introduction to black blues. So wonderful to hear it again. Thank you youtube.

This song was a favorite of Paul McCartney and John Lennon, the Beatles used to perform it in early concerts.  It was also the inspiration of the the 1964 song
Babies in Black.  They loved the three-four blues thing.....

This is when music was worth listening to.

This is a masterpiece!

Does anyone know who played harmonica on this? I've always loved the harmonica on this.

Carole Costa

@Tim Adams Thanks!

I just bought a CD called "Soul Voices", newly released on Kent Records (UK); in the sleeve notes for a Junior Lewis track, Ady Croasdell says that his song was written by Buddy Lucas, who also played the harmonica on this James Ray track - and the sax solo on Dion's "The Wanderer"! Talented guy!

This may had been Ray's biggest hit which sadly he died way too young and who knows where his career would've gone.

This recording is unusual in that it has what sounds like a Tuba at the introduction of the song.
I remember this being played quite often on 'Family Favourites' when it was first released.
