All Along the Watchtower
Jimi Hendrix Lyrics

There must be some kind of way outta here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief

Business men, they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody offered his word
Hey, hey

No reason to get excited
The thief, he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke
But, uh, but you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us stop talkin' falsely now
The hour's getting late, hey

Hey

All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Barefoot servants, too
Well, uh, outside in the cold distance
A wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl, hey

All along the watchtower

All along the watchtower

Here are covers I think are better (in terms of how it compares to the original)

Elton John’s cover of The Who’s Pinball Wizard

Basically anything done by Elvis Presley (lol)

David Bowie’s cover of the Rolling Stone’s Let’s Spend the Night Together

George Harrison’s cover of Bob Dylan’s If Not For You

John Lennon’s cover of Stand By Me

The Beatles cover of Twist and Shout and Dizzy Miss Lizzy

The Rolling Stones cover of Buddy Holly’s Not Fade Away

Nirvana’s cover of David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold the World

Those are all my favorite covers off the top of my head

Not many people know it, but Jimi Hendrix was perfectionist when it comes to this song. Studio people tried to rush him (because time and tape were both expensive) but story has it that he had over 50 takes on this song with just the guitar parts to make it absolutely perfect, the way he wanted it to be in his mind. Safe to say, you can hear it. Absolute perfection in every possible way.

@Carl_Anderson Great post. It is also noteworthy that Jimi also played bass on Watchtower and most of the tracks on Electric Ladyland. Mitch Mitchell said in the Electric Ladyland liner notes that "he [Jimi] was a fine bass player...solid and very busy...like a baby James Jamerson." [Motown's bass phenom]. Jimi possessed that rare gift, like Prince, of being able to create musically on the spot and excel on a number of instruments. Rare talent and the mark of genius.

@Hippie Running off nothing Yes, i have already been informed that it was Dylan that got the words to his Watchtower song wrong but Hendrix got the words to Dylan's song right.
