One thing I absolutely hated about this movie, I don't understand how this even became a problem, was how muted Greenwood's music was throughout the film. Especially here which was the best track that you can only barely hear in the opening scene.

Inherent Vice is kind of like a doped up, 21st century Chinatown.

@James Satchwill very interesting... I definitely see what you're getting at. The voice overs are similar too... Im going to have to rewatch Apocalypse Now (one of my all time favourite adaptation... The fact theyre both adaptations also would support your theory) with your comment in mind.

@Chameleonardodavinci Listen to this part: https://youtu.be/hOCntG8VJNo?t=2131 of the Apocalypse Now soundtrack and then listen to Shasta starting @ :15. Similar yes?
There is also a part of the Apocalypse soundtrack here: @ https://youtu.be/hOCntG8VJNo?t=4270 that really gives the same vibe. All of this is why Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness is such a classic...they all depict the journey of finding yourself as your finding another. And the settings are hell-like.

@James Satchwill that's a really interesting take actually

Apocalypse Now is what I most compare Vice to...Both have a special investigator making (hallucinating?) his way through hell in a journey to find an insane man of power, and in this case wealth. Soundtrack had the same feel too. 1970 L.A. vs 1970 Vietnam. Both on one big Stoner Trip where one seems to have a foot in the grave and the other in a paradise.

Big Lebowski.
