Wow. This stings. I just turned 56 and I feel the same way. Life flew by. I had a really good run though. My childhood memories of always being outside with my friends are priceless. I have a few regrets/mistakes but I guess we all do. Enjoy every day from here on out. Dad’s were always right.

I was a year old when this movie was released. I grew up in the 90s. The 80s and 90s were pretty similar in times. I get a huge wave of nostalgia with the song and video. At 37 now I gotta wonder where the time went. BTW this is one of my favorite movies seen it when I was 6 years old.

In the fall of 1984, the Make A Wish Foundation contacted the band Journey. A 16-year old fan from Cleveland named Kenny Sykaluk was in the final days of his lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. One of his dreams was to meet his musical idols. The members of Journey flew to Cleveland in November to meet the boy as he lay in a hospital, gasping for air; his young lungs were giving out on him. Among the gifts Journey brought with them was a cassette containing the band’s upcoming single, a song cut from their 1983 hit album, Frontiers, but soon to be released on the soundtrack to the film Vision Quest. That song was “Only the Young.”

Kenny became one of the very first Journey fans to hear the song, as he played it on his Walkman while the band stood by his bedside. Eventually, the visit came to an end and Journey returned to their homes back in California. @Corona Kick Hard work and dedication are not completely gone from the youth, but it does seem to be a lot different from the 80s and 90s. There are plenty of kids who have parents pushing them and professionalizing kids sports in the hope that little Suzie or Johnny will make the college team. I remember when sports was focused on molding healthy and well rounded kids.

We grew up without cell phones, without calculators in math class, without computers, driving stick shift cars with cassette decks or 8 tracks, we had simpler times, less polluted society, no PC culture, and great music sung without lip sync or autotune. Bands wrote their songs and played their instruments and times were definitely better.

Many of us really didnt understand the beauty of our youth. At the time we mostly dreamed of hurrying and finally growing the heck up so we could do what we wanted. Now as adults we at times yearn for some of the days of our youth. The first girl that ever showed any interest in me ( an ugly duckling i considered myself to be) when i was 14 was the sweetest nicest girl. I came from a rougher home without much love and I considered myself quite unlikeable. She proved to me....that someone could actually like me. She ended up being the first love of my life. Unfortunately she died a few years after it all at only the age of 18. Now decades later i still think of her and her sweet spirit. How she had to have been an angel to like a misfit like me. Especially at such a crucial developmental moment of my adolescents where acceptance and love is exactly what i needed. I can still so clearly hear her soft voice from our childhood. Sad but i look at the memory more with gratitude today. I'm just glad that it ever happened. Sending strength and positive vibes to everyone who read. Brave carry on.

I watched this last night for the first time in years. I forgot how truly great and inspirational it is. There are so many scenes that would never be allowed today, and of course those scenes are the best part of the movie because it deals with real life situations. Louden pushes himself to the limit so that he can face the best rather than just being above average. My young son and I will watch this movie many times together

I was born in 1963,and my parents really struggled raising 3 kids throughout the 60's and 70's in rural Indiana, and my younger brother and I had to work for everything we wanted, like dirt bikes and such, because our parents couldn't afford to buy such things.
The future looked bleak job wise in that area, and all of the good paying jobs were taken, and the replacement lists were long, waiting for someone to retire or die.
I joined the Army before graduating high school in 1982,as so many before me all the way back to the Vietnam War did, because there wasn't much else, and I spent the whole decade of the 80's in the Army.
There was good times and bad times then, like the old Led Zeppelin song says, but if I had to live it all over again, I would, if I had the option of changing some of the shity things I did or said, all of those long dead years ago.

Visionquest was my first date movie in 1985. What a perfect movie that pretty much ended my childhood, and put me on a road to adulthood. Still one of the most poignant and favorite songs of my life. Almost too perfect to be true.

Even though I grew up in this decade, I was 17 when this movie came out, I've never seen "Vision Quest" until today. This song brought a rush of memories back. I'm so glad I grew up in the '80s because I was able to experience the great music first hand. I'd go back in a heartbeat, even if it's just for a fleeting moment.

I remember this movie but it was Madonna’s “Crazy for You” that overshadowed the rest of the soundtrack. This song was way better. Makes me long for my youth and all the energy, hope and strength that came with it. I enjoy being in my 50s with the woman I love but there are songs that are just so powerful, like this one, that make you long for days gone by.

Only the Young to me is an overwhelming song. I had to deal with adult issues early in my life (78) and counted the days I would be free. The song for me was a reminder of the bittersweet memories I have of the 80's. The cup of nostalgia I pour now reminds me I should not have rushed to become an adult but instead made more memories to cherish. There will never be another Golden Age like the 80's and that is why I always remain faithfully. Journey with Steve Perry ended a year before I graduated. The break up taught me a life lesson. Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. No regrets! Just memories.

Vision Quest, great movie, totally 80s. I'm 48, and this brings back memories. Reminds me of H.S, wrestling practice and freedom. I sometimes drive through my neighborhood where I grew up in the 80s, and the houses look the same, but all the people are different, brings a tear to my eye. I'd give anything to go back.. It was the happiest time in my life. Life is hard in these times we live, 2021.

Growing up and wrestling in high school, this was pretty much the only movie that us high school wrestlers had as far as a motivational and inspirational movie... this movie is very realistic when it comes to the grind, the strenuous workouts and practices and the discipline and sacrifices it takes to cut and make weight for competition... I will always have a love for this movie and I remember renting it from Blockbuster back in the early 2000s while I was on the wrestling team and I ended up paying like 30 something dollars because I never returned it LOL

I also was wrestling when this movie came out. It was the best. The weight cutting is harder than anyone can imagine. I cut 22 pounds to get to 105 my senior year. It took a special dedication. They wont even allow that now days. And that's probably a good thing. I loved it and miss it.

This song and movie carries a lot of emotion and memories for me. I was a high school senior at the time and in wrestling. Journey has been one of my favorite bands and this song got a lot of airtime back then, so the emotions and memories really hit hard when you watch the video and song together 36 years later.

This song is spiritual. I just learned about the visit that the band paid to the hospital to see the young man who was dying of cystic fibrosis. I graduated high school in 1985. This song was getting a lot of air play in the Spring of 1985. Every time I hear it now, I realize Journey was singing about youth of the 70s and 80s in the shadow of the prior generation and we were waiting for our turn. Our turn came, we grew up, we had children, lived lives, adventures, wars, tragedy and even death. I hear this song now, see these images and it evokes feelings of so much promise, so much future, so much youth and life to find and live. Now firmly on the downside of the curve, I can see how it will play out for me and my story is mostly written it's just a matter of acting out the last 25 or so years and enjoying the sunsets. Others are now facing what we faced in a completely different way and I get these pangs of regret that these kids now probably don't see the future at all like we did; glowing and full of promise. We had Journey and great movies like this to inspire us, now they have pandemics and Netflix. How awful.

Epic.... Epic Song, Epic Movie!! I watched this movie again today for the first time in many years and I was overwhelmed with feeling. As a child of the 80's growing up in those times these movies and songs really played a huge part in our lives. They filled our hearts with Hope, Love, Adventure, Excitement, etc. It was simple but filled with color and imagination. Listening to this song and watching this movie today also made me feel a sense of loneliness. It reminded me of the search for true happiness and love. It reminded me not to settle and to GO For IT. It reminded me that you have to have something worth fighting for! It reminded me to face my fears head on and in todays times I feel as though we have maybe lost some of that in our music and movies. Today we have been consumed by social media with a loss of feeling almost completely numb, unmoved and unamused but are in need for instant gratification. These were times where you actually had to fight for it, put in the time, fall on your face, pick yourself up and do it all over again if only for that one moment, that moment where you felt unstoppable as if you had lifted off the ground and were soaring through the sky,it was worth it all! We live in a different time but also we are those that are really truly blessed to have come from an era where there was still some innocence, fantasy, hope, a story with a happy ending with meaning that we could relate to. We are so lucky to have come from those times and are so lucky to feel and be moved by a movie as simple as a boy determined to overcome the odds, find a woman who made him want to be better to push harder to follow his heart and to succeed. There are plenty of songs and movies today with similar stories but there are few and far between with the same emotion, and real feeling of "hey I can relate to that 18yr old boy or 21yr old girl" There is a real message there. I really have to ask myself "Have I done the best, did I settle, did I follow my Vision Quest did I find that someone who makes me want to fight who makes me be the best person I can be??? I really have to ask myself that! I can also say that its never too late and that's what makes this so unbelievably powerful. This is more likely my favorite Journey song. As uplifting as it is, there is also a very sad backstory that I did not know about until recently.

From Wikipedia-
The first individual outside the band to hear the song was sixteen-year-old Kenny Sykaluk of Rocky River, Ohio, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. His mother wrote a letter to the band telling them about her son's terminal condition, and how big a fan he was of Journey. The band flew to his hospital bedside in Cleveland , Ohio at the request of the Make A Wish Foundation. Along with a Walkman containing the new track, the band also brought Kenny a football helmet signed by the San Francisco 49ers and an autographed Journey platinum record award. The experience of playing the song for Kenny left Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain deeply affected. Perry said, "As soon as I walked out of the hospital room, I lost it. Nurses had to take me to a room by myself." On the band's episode of VH1's Behind the Music, Cain broke down in tears recalling the event, remarking that "children should not have to live with that kind of pain". Kenny died the next day, with the Walkman still in his hand. The song brought life into perspective for the band and left them humbled. Neal Schon said that Kenny's death affected Journey by making them re-evaluate the issues that were causing friction inside the band itself. In honor of Kenny Sykaluk, the band used the song as their opener for the Raised on the Radio tour.

It is in "your head' as these times were special to "you" exclusively. Do not act like the 80s or this or that decade is the best as that is an illusion. The story/inspiration behind this song is incredible. Was supposed to never be released. When Make A Wish foundation first started, Steve and Neil met with a dying boy as one of his last requests. As a gift to him, they gave him a Walkman with some recordings cut from prior albums. Once they saw his eyes light up when he heard this song they knew it had to be released in his honor.
