Background:
On August 3, 2012, DSP Entertainment announced that the group will be return later in the month to release their fifth mini-album. They were reportedly on the last stages of recording the album and were now in the process of selecting a title track. Some fans speculated that the album's title would be called "Storyteller" after a banner showing its name was shown in the group's official website. However it was eventually taken down. Then on August 6, a teaser picture of a cube along with the title track's release date was revealed. The following day, the album's title was then revealed by their agency and explained its origin to be from the Greek mythology. They added that the group will be aiming to display a different on stage as opposed to the album cover. The album cover was unveiled on August 10. Teaser pictures for each member sporting colored new looks were simultaneously released from August 13 to 17.
Nicole stated during the album's show case that the group are aiming to display their "maturing feminism".
Concept and artwork:
The group revealed the album's cover on their official website on August 10. It which shows the group on an elegant set with a chandelier in the middle, wearing chic make-up and formal attires. The concept of the album was to show the group's matured charms through a modern interpretation of the popular Greek myth, Pandora's Box. Steward Ho for Mnet noted that the group were about to "ditch their younger image and look more like empowered woman".

The album contains four songs in total plus an instrumental version of the title track. The group once again worked with Han Jae Ho and Kim Seung Soo along with Sweetune who produced most of the group's past material. The title track, "Pandora", is a synth-pop dance track.
