Sat in Your Lap
Kate Bush Lyrics
I see the people working
And see it working for them
And so I want to join in
But then I find it hurts me
Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap
Some say that knowledge is something that you never have
I see the people happy
So can it happen for me?
'Cause when I am unhappy
There's nothing that can move me
Some say that knowledge is something that you never have
Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap
Some say that heaven is hell
Some say that hell is heaven
I must admit, just when I think I'm king
(I just begin)
Just when I think I'm king, I must admit
(I just begin)
Just when I think I'm king
(I just begin)
I've been doing it for years
My goal is moving near
It says, look, I'm over here
Then it up and disappears
Some say that knowledge is something sat in your lap
Some say that knowledge is ho-ho-ho-ho
I want to be a lawyer
I want to be a scholar
But I really can't be bothered
Ooh, just gimme it quick, gimme it, gimme gimme gimme gimme!
Some say that knowledge is ho-ho-ho
Some say that knowledge is ho-ho-ho
Some say that heaven is hell
Some say that hell is heaven
I must admit, just when I think I'm king
(I just begin)
Just when I think I'm king, I must admit
(I just begin)
Just when I think everything's going great
(I just begin)
I get the break
Hey, I'm gonna take it all
(I just begin)
When I'm king
(Just begin)
In my dome of ivory
A home of activity
I want the answers quickly
But I don't have no energy
I hold a cup of wisdom
But there is nothing within
My cup, she never overfloweth
And 'tis I that moan and groaneth
Some grey and white matter
(Give me the karma, mama)
I'm coming up the ladder
I'm coming up the ladder
(A jet to Mecca)
Up the ladder
(Tibet or Jeddah)
(To Salisbury)
(A monastery)
(The longest journey)
(Across the desert)
(Across the weather)
(Across the elements)
(Across the water)

Shadow Sonata
Kate isn't just a singer, she's the modern version of a medieval bard. A storyteller who's songs pull you into the tale she's telling.
Nerdic Warrior
She'd be great in a game of D&D.

It's a song about hard work! About how so many of us want the glory, the reward but the effort is too daunting.
Even when you think you have made it to the top, you have to work really hard to stay there.
Embark on your pilgrimage in bare feet to earn the reward.
Well that's how I read it anyway.

Totally, frigging original. No one like her. I can't believe this is 40 yrs old. A genius shockingly ahead of her time. While they were shoving Princes Lame crap down our throats we should have listened to this. But it's obvious what she's saying here

Practically invented the music video

But, you do feel a Kate Bush song, do you not?

What A Wild Day We Had Filming "Sat In Your Lap" In Studio 1. I Played A Minotaur and If you listen closely at 2:00 One of the Bamboo canes I was whipping through the air to make a Percussive Rhythm with Paddy Bush splintered, and so I cracked it in half across my knee in time. Kate kept it in the record - She always did have good taste.😂

@Marc Newton Doll On The Music Box! I see the comparison!

Yo @TheGerkuman !. Yes I was - Although I spent most of that session in the Abbey Road Cafe with Paddy and Jimmy Bain while Geoff did his parts. Jimmy was up next and Kate had just met him somewhere in Abbey Road and he had no idea what he was in for and was a bit nervous.
That Brilliant Sexy Percussive Sound is Kate Sampling Herself into Fairlight. Good Questions. Cheeers Preston

@ALLNIGHT MUSICMAN were you in the studio when Geoff Downes was programming the trumpet synths? And also, the 'oof' noise that's used as percussion: Was it from the Fairlight, or a drum machine?
