Under new direction from record producer Lloyd Chalmers, the song "Everything I Own" surprisingly was Number One in the UK in 1974. The song, written by David Gates, was given a sympathetic light reggae feel and found instant favour in the West Indies and in the U.K.
Boothe seemed, at the time, to have the makings of an international, long-lasting, hit maker, certainly when compared to most of the other latter-day reggae acts. His smoother style gave him a wider appeal, rather like UB40 and Aswad. Boothe's choice of songs also showed the breadth of his musical taste. But for all that, he only managed one more hit in the UK Chart, "Crying over You", which made Number 11.
In more recent times, Boothe has also recorded for Bunny Lee, Phil Pratt, King Jammy, Pete Weston, Jack Ruby, Hugh "Red Man" James, Castro Brown, and Tappa Zukie. Plus in 1995, he teamed up with Shaggy, for a new styled version of his old track, "The Train Is Coming", which appeared on the soundtrack of the film, Money Train.
A double-disc overview of Boothe's Trojan years, Crying over You, was released by the label in 2001.

Everything I Own
Ken Boothe Lyrics
You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, set me free
The finest years I ever knew
Is all the years I had with you
And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my own
And I would give anything I own
Just to have you back again
Is there someone you know
That won't let you go
And taking it all for granted?
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And you don't hear the words they say
And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my own
I would give anything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to talk to you words again
If there's someone you know
That won't let you go
And taking it all for granted?
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And you don't hear the words they say
And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my own
And I would give anything I own
Just to have you back again
Just to talk to you words again
Just hold you once again

You are the Light that guides me
From midnight to noon
In Love I take refuge
In solitude my company
Bring me peace and joy
The truth and harmony
In acceptance praises me
But without ego in magic
Only in faith can you infect me
Frequently and in tune
Like the sound of my life
The best of melody
The Ego repudiates
Don't criticize or rate me
In perfect sync
At night it takes pain
At dawn brings mastery
És a Luz que me guia
Da meia noite ao meio dia
No Amor me refugia
Na solidão minha companhia
Me traz a paz e a alegria
A verdade e harmonia
Na aceitação me elogia
Mas sem ego na magia
Só na fé me contagia
Com frequência e sintonia
Como o som da minha vida
O melhor da melodia
O Ego repudia
Não me critica ou avalia
Em perfeita sincronia
Na noite leva a dor
No amanhecer traz maestria
Eu te Amo

It was later covered by Horace Andy, who also released it in 1974.

David Gates of BREAD wrote this about his father in 1972. Many people think it's about a broken relationship, but it's about the loss of his father. This great version by Ken Boothe reached number 1 in 1974, as did Boy George's version in 1987. I lost my father in 2010 and miss him every day.
To everyone who has lost a parent or loved one, this great song is for you.

@Alfred Stewart It's like the word 'love'. It means different things to different people. Some people are clingy, some are insecure, some people believe in freedom or being polyamouras, whilst others believe in monogamy. As a Psychotherapist, I know that people's beliefs and perceptions create the reality they live in. What people hear, and what other people want them to hear don't always correlate to one another.
So depending on our Cognitive Biases, we believe something or understand it, depending on our personal levels of understanding... Whether that relates to songs, Relationships, or whatever....
Alfred Stewart
The singer / songwriter, Gilbert O'Sullivan, once said, in an interview, that he will never comment on what his songs are about. He went on to say, each individual makes and gives their own meaning to songs and this is the way it should remain. I kind of agree with him. And you?

@Tony Hall Great words Tony. I too have lost my son and my best mate, Gary Jnr in the last 5 years; he was 34 on that fateful day and would have been 40 now. Your spot on; it takes time and there are no rules, no time limits or training courses. My wife goes to Church more now, and I seem to workout more, both of us dealing with it differently at every turn. My two Grandsons keep me from straying into depression mate; one is actually a Boxer at 14 who has won 3 Scottish Amateur Titles and represented Scotland 2 weeks ago the other is 22 and doing great and is now a time-served Painter. Take Care 💖
This song, sung by Ken Boothe is a brilliant version of the original and actually reminds me of my misspent youth from 1974... 🤦♂️

@Tony HallThank you so much for sharing everything so eloquently. You are absolutely right in what you say. How sad to lose a beautiful child at such a young age. As you say, somehow you learn to live with that pain. I can't imagine the pain of losing a child. Thanks again for telling me about dear Conor. God bless him. Life has never been fair, but losing your son must be the most painful thing any human being can go through. God bless you and your family. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Tony Hall
@D U Sivri you can't deal with it .
You just learn to live without them.
3 years Went to work came home..went to work came home...did that for 3 years...couldn't socialise. Or be around groups of social gatherings....you go into
" Hermit Healing Mode " I call it...just overwhelming grief and mourning the loss...Conor was just 16..moped accident in June 2011...he would've been 27 now....eventually in time you 💔 you pull yourself up and out of the depths of deep depression and learn to move and push forward...it takes time...a long time....there are no rules...no time limit ....no training courses....on how to deal with it.
You become more Sensitive and Empathetic towards others. As a Cancerian I'm that anyway! But your emotions and feelings sky rocket!
You Learn to smile again and have fun...as Conor looks down from Above I like to think I can make him smile not cry or feel sad as he keeps an eye on me 😉🙏....you imagine the roles reversed...and you realise you wouldn't want your son destroying himself .....that's how I analysed things..Spiritually I know he's with me in Spirit....
I Believev l'll meet him again in the Next World where he will be waiting for me 😉👍❤️🙏🙏
