Originally intended as a reissue of her debut album The Fame, the project was later developed into a standalone EP containing eight new tracks. A deluxe edition of the EP was released alongside the standard version and is a reissue of her debut album The Fame along with the tracks from the EP.
Gaga opposed the idea of a re-release, believing it was conceptually different from The Fame and too expensive for fans, describing the two albums as yin and yang.
Musically, The Fame Monster is an electropop project with influences from disco, glam rock, synth-pop, industrial and gothic music. It was also inspired by fashion and runway culture. Lyrically, the EP explores the darker side of fame, with Gaga using monster metaphors to represent her fears and experiences. The album's two cover artworks were shot by Hedi Slimane, one of which featured a gothic theme that was initially rejected by her record label before Gaga convinced them otherwise.
The EP received critical acclaim and achieved commercial success, topping charts in multiple countries, including Australia, Belgium, Finland, New Zealand and Poland. In the United States, it peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 and topped the Dance/Electronic Albums chart. It has been certified five-times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The Fame Monster*was nominated for six Grammy Awards at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and won three, including Best Pop Vocal Album.
The lead single, "Bad Romance", became a global hit, reaching number one in over 20 countries and peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The following singles, "Telephone (feat. Beyoncé)" and "Alejandro", also achieved international success, reaching the top 10 in multiple territories."Dance in the Dark" was released as a single in select regions, achieving moderate chart success.
To support the EP, Gaga embarked on The Monster Ball Tour, which became the highest-grossing tour by a debut headlining artist.
