It follows their Grammy-winning debut "The Heist" and was self-released on 26 February 2016. The LP features their successful single "Downtown", as well as their controversial song "White Privilege II".
An album trailer was shared on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's website to announce the album and the inspiration behind it. The recording of "This Unruly Mess I've Made" took place in the woods in a small cabin and resulted in a month-and-a-half of making music with no distractions. Macklemore described it as his "most prolific month-and-a-half ever".
Just before the album release, a third single titled "Kevin" and featuring vocals from Leon Bridges was released on 24 February 2016.
