Lessard joined Last Chance To Reason in 2008 after the departure of original vocalist Mike Levenseller and Bob Delaney, a well know vocalist in the Maine music scene who had joined the band for their debut album, Lvl. 1 after Mike Levenseller left in 2007. Since joining, Lessard has released two albums with Last Chance To Reason, Level 2 in 2011 and Level 3 in 2013.
In mid-2013, it was announced that after the departure of lead vocalist Jonathan Carpenter, Michael Lessard would take over vocal duties in progressive metal band, The Contortionist. Over a year later, The Contortionist released their first album with new vocalist Michael Lessard entitled Language. In November 2015, The Contortionist released Language (Rediscovered Edition) which included four reworked versions of songs off the album which were all recorded acoustically and live. The four songs include The Source, Language I, Primordial Sound and The Parable. In 2017, The Contortionist released Clairvoyant, their 2nd album with Michael Lessard as vocalist. Clairvoyant featured little to no screaming with predominately clean singing. In August 2019, The Contortionist released their first EP with Michael Lessard, Our Bones. The EP featured two full-length songs, an ambient interlude and a cover of The Smashing Pumpkins 1979.
In June 2020, Lessard released his first solo song, Use The Rest. The song features an acoustic guitar, simple drumming, clean vocals and post-production additions including shoegaze-style vocal effects and electronic flourishes.
