I teach music lessons, and I was talking with one of the other instructors a few weeks ago. He asked me about albums I've been enjoying lately. I forget what I told him, but I remember he told me he'd been listening to "Pink Moon" by Nick Drake a lot lately. I told him I had never heard of Nick Drake, and he told me it was a fantastic album. I just finished listening to it for the first time.

While I was listening, I read the Wikipedia article about Nick Drake. I wanted to know a little more about who he was. Sometimes, it helps to know a little about the voice you're hearing. Turns out, we don't really know a lot about Nick Drake. We know he was extremely depressed, and that he died young (only 26 years old) from an overdose of prescribed antidepressants - not known whether it was an accident or a suicide. Seems like he mostly kept to himself. He didn't like being interviewed and even withdrew from live performances completely towards the end of his life. Very tragic.

The other thing that really surprised me was to find that his popularity was almost completely posthumous. He recorded three albums, and none of them sold more than 5,000 copies while he was alive. It seems like he didn't really start gaining a following until after he died. How is this possible? Well, there were a number of factors, but it seems like one of the main ones was that better-known artists like Kate Bush and Robert Smith stumbled across Drake's music by chance, and were inspired by it.

I like to think of all this as an example of why recorded music is such an important art form. This album made me feel things - I can't quite put it into words, but it's tangible to me. If you're a creator of any kind, whether you're a poet, a painter, or a singer, just put your work out there. Sometimes, it's easy to forget why art is so valuable. Doctors, firefighters, cooks, and teachers are all noble, important lines of work. Those are the people who keep us alive. However, artists like Nick Drake are the people who make life worth living, and that's equally important, in my opinion. I'm sad that Nick Drake died so young, but I'm glad we can still experience his music and that it brought all of us here. Peace!

the tape warmth, dead woody string sound, and the voice neatly complimenting those textures is like a warm energy blanket. The more you listen the more you realize how incredible these compositions really are, deceptively simple yet complex and full of nuance. It's a hell of a lot he packed into such a short album. And that's not even mentioning the lyrics.. the way you can say to yourself 'ok im going to really listen to what hes saying this time around' yet get lost in a dream of the picking and tone everytime! its like it induces you into a state of hypnagogia and keeps your rational mind from neatly unpacking what any of it specifically means. Some of these songs are obviously more melancholic and representing some great inner turmoil but the few that seem more ambiguous are absolutely stunning and keep me coming back to listen again and again. A secret friend to many.

Absolutely, speaks a language of its own between and around the actual lyrics, Nick Drake was a musical visionary for sure n language was music first and while eloquent as can be English second which I've admired most of my life, Nick Drake spoke the language of Light and Truth I believe myself, musically first n plane speaking poetically next, that guitar always has had a say as well, nobody plays quite like Nick did, to this day which have been listening to for 22 years, still likely my favorite, favorite album to drift out to for all 22 of them years of the privilege to know the work of Nick Drake, nothing but love forever here

@White7 agreed. But i would say the guitar and voice are knitting together so it's hard to say which is influencing the other. The way the voice comes in at the oddest measures is easy to overlook too, this is a sign of someone who has done both of these things simultaneously at great depths of practice, and it's incredibly easy to overlook how hard it is to do like that. His voice is weaving in with the fingers plucking and strumming, providing rhythmic and melodic counterpoint that is always on the verge of being slightly off. All the greats seem to do this if you listen closely. Like two separate entities that are calmly supporting each other in one person. I like how you see the lyrics and use of his voice as a language in itself though, it really is, and it transcends everyday language. This is what all good music is supposed to be! but yes his own little musical world, with the idiosyncratic and completely original yet connected to the roots of those who came before style of playing is gold.

I listened to this album while going through the worst heroin withdrawal I had ever gone through in my life. I wanted to die but my body just wouldn’t let me, even though it didn’t feel like it was humanly possible I could’ve survived that. Nick drake, Elliott smith, Joy Division and a few other CDs on this shitty portable disc man from the 90’s (but this was in 2020). Funny enough, these songs don’t remind me of heroin or withdrawal. They remind me of the peace I sought at the end of that unbearable tunnel.

I hope that Nick is somewhere, at last enjoying the respect and the love he so much craved for during his lifetime. It would be sad if he didn't see how we all appreciate his amazing musical skills and his overwhelming sensitivity. At the time, people were not able to notice how great his talent was, maybe he was too ahead his time. But now that we are all aware what a true artist he was, even if it's too late, I so deeply wish he could gain the self esteem he always lacked, be proud of himself, and understand he didn't waste his time on this planet. And I also wish we all learn to respect and love and appreciate each other while we're still alive.

Read he was put as an opener to more...'easy' bands and got very bad responses, so unfortunately his reluctance to perform, and increasing depression, may also have been due to mismanagement.

The saddest part of it all is, even counting that last night where he took the abundance of pills and for whatever reason, his last days and weeks and even months (2 years between the last album and his death eh) on this planet, will have been thinking he will forever be unknown, his albums unsold.

I don’t think Nick Drake craved love and respect. I never knew him but I think he had plenty of those things. He just found he was playing backwards and had nothing more to say. He gradually fades out to nothing on Pink
Moon, and then the poor fellow disappears. It’s very hard to put this into words, I apologize if I’m talking gibberish. Drake tends to do this to people. But I don’t think he craved anything, I don’t think he thought in those terms.

I fell in love so hard with the sweetest guy i’ve ever met. When we started dating, we were kissing in his room, just kissing and cuddling, he played this album and we didn’t say a word until it was over, our love felt exactly like the album and we didn’t want to interrupt it.

He moved for a few months to miami and started doing hard drugs, when he came back to Panama he was not the sweet boy I fell in love with anymore. I grieve everyday the fact that I lost him forever. He is not the sweet guy anymore, but I will forever love and support him.

This is the album that I listened to the most while I was falling for him, and I listen to it now that I’m trying to get over him

To think, that the musical wave of his time made it so he would have little success, and whether that played a part in his tragic depression or not, it gives us an opportunity to evolve and be open minded as often as possible cuz Art is Limitless and not Trendy. Thank you so much for uploading this. It pains me to admit that I had never heard of this genius until a short bio of him appeared in my feed this morning. It was enough to intrigue me and here I am. What exquisite and sublime music. I’m so very sorry that he didn’t get the recognition he deserved and that he struggled emotionally, a loss to those hungry for his brand of beauty. At least his work is still available for us to enjoy, and while I’m very late to the party, I’m glad to be here!

It is amazing how the quality of his songs was totally not recognized at that strange time (early 70s). His personality definitely did not help. There is wonderfully rich guitar sound in those recordings.

I finally gave in. In a lot of Opeth song comments this man is mentioned and I was like what kind of hipster trash is this? I was so so so so wrong. Sorry Nick, wherever you are. Your music touches deep within and fits my soul. I am generally happy but with sad undertones and I don't mind. Most of the time sadness ends up making me feel happy. I love it when the sky is grey and gloomy. When the trees are without leafs and the earth is drenched in blistering rain. This music feels like looking outside on such a day and feeling content. You know, life is nice and we should all appreciate it and eachother more. Love to all of you.

He never lost hope. It's a shame people assume he killed himself. He accidentally overdosed on anti-depressant medication while back living with his parents in the family home .. the potency of the medication was unknown, and his dad said they would never have left them with him to self medicate if the family had known that they could be fatal.

Just like war! You only get the perspective from the victors, never the dead.
And that is a simple truth.
There is no such thing as an accidental overdose. We all have agency on what we put in our bodies.
Now, whether we are making that decision because someone tells us, it is right, is different.

Not me. This is my first listen through any of his music and I am seriously finding it boring, bland and not really worth my time. I grew up loving folk music (whereas all my contemporaries were into heavier things.... they used to jokingly say that I was into "Heavy Mellow") .... but this... The guitar playing is the only factor worth attention. The rest of it just plain sucks.

Sorry... this music didn't "find me". Not even a little.

Nick was like the Van Gogh of music. Both men were ahead of their time and made great art unappreciated when they were here. The legacy they left behind to us is incredibly beautiful. If I have a bad day all I have to do is think of them and remind myself how great life is. 😀

I heard Nick for the first time about 15 years ago on a Cinemax program they ran on him. It breaks my heart to think about how society ignored this man while he lived. These songs are so moving and entertaining! I hope you find peace in your next existence, sir. RIP

It's pretty easy to say this album or that album was ahead of it's time because it had a couple screams, or stumbled on some new guitar tone. But this album and artist were both way ahead of their time. Back in 1972 people were not even close to being ready to face this level of introspection, self conflict, and brutal honesty. Most probably still aren't.

For those who ask why this wasn't bigger when it was released. It had nothing to do with sound, performance, personality, or behavior. It had everything to do with the shit people were too afraid to face in and about themselves. Perhaps it has always been easier to create new superficial wounds to gush over instead of trying to heal the much deeper, longer standing ones.

Be good folks. It's pretty easy.

I had known of him when younger..but never listened to him. My older siblings liked a lot of folk. When in 2007 Nick's family released that family tree compilation I had bought it...After I heard that I went straight to my folky sis and she gave me a burned cd of Five Leaves Left...I have been hooked on his music ever since. I know why he influenced a lot of people including edgy goth punk type artists for decades.
