He started his career as a member of the band 'Cantores de Ébano', in the 50's. His unique low-pitched voice was one of the most powerful within the group. In 1969 he released his only solo album, "Só o Ôme". It features his signature song "16 Toneladas", a portuguese cover version of Ernie Ford's and Merle Travis' "Sixteen Tons".
