I of the Storm
Of Monsters and Men Lyrics

If I could face them
If I could make amends
With all my shadows
I'd bow my head
And welcome them
But I feel it burning
Like when the winter wind
Stops my breathing

Are you really going to love me
When I'm gone
I fear you won't
I fear you don't

And it echoes when I breathe
'Till all you'll see
Is my ghost
Empty vessel, crooked teeth
Wish you could see
And they call me under
And I'm shaking like a leaf
And they call me under
And I wither underneath
In this storm

I am a stranger
I am an alien
Inside a structure
Are you really going to love me
When I'm gone
With all my thoughts
And all my faults
I feel it biting
I feel it break my skin
So uninviting

Are you really going to need me
When I'm gone
I fear you won't
I fear you don't

And it echoes when I breathe
'Till all you see is my ghost
Empty vessel, crooked teeth
Wish you could see
And they call me under
And I'm shaking like a leaf
And they call me under
And I wither underneath
In this storm

I feel it
And they call me under
And I'm shaking like a leaf
And they call me underneath
To this storm

If I could face them
If I could make amends with all my shadows

But I feel it burning
Like when the winter wind
Stops my breathing
Are you really gonna love me when I'm gone?
I fear you won't
I fear you don't

Empty vessel, crooked teeth
Wish you could see

And they call me under
And I'm shaking like a leaf

i love this-- i personally think it's about being transgender, and in general feeling like you don't belong in your own body, or like your body doesn't represent who you are inside.

my opinion of course derives from the appearance of the actor in the video, but this is not the sole factor. if you listen carefully to the vocals, you will obviously be able to tell it's a female voice singing-- however, some parts have a small male voice in the background. in my opinion, this whole song is coming from inside, and the female voice is the loudest, rather than the male voice.

"if i could face them" ; sort of has a dual meaning to me, like "if i could face my family and those around me about this issue" or "if i could face my feelings about myself and the fears i'm holding inside"

"i am a stranger, i am an alien inside a structure" ; is like them saying their thoughts and the way they feel do not belong in that body. they're a stranger to their own body because they feel like it is not their own, or the two don't belong.

the rest of the chorus (to me) represents sort of the fragility, self-doubt, and in general the fear that comes with these feelings.

this is just my interpretation-- and i know some may get offended that i'm talking about being transgender when i am not trans myself, but i have friends who are, and who have so courageously told me about their experiences. with that, i know that not all trans individuals have the same feelings or general experience, but i feel like "feeling like you don't belong in your own body" is something that many of them do feel. i love and support all individuals, and i can only hope that if you are transgender that you are able to one day find the courage to come out and tell everyone about who you really are inside and how you'd like to supported and referred to as. . . never be afraid to be who are, or to ask people to respect that !!!

But

You're hurting people just by thinking that those things are bad

They're not hurting anybody, but you are by hating them? Why? Just why..

Look what religion did to people
We just hate eachother man-

Carleton Clements Late, but,

1. You'd have to define what is natural first.
By your logic, people wearing clothing fabricated in a factory and using smartphones would also go against all that is natural. If you really want to be all that "natural", then why don't you go crawl naked into a cave and live off of raw meat like we did millions of years ago?

2. Atheists don't have the highest suicide rates. That's simply false and taken out of context. The only statistics we had for that was a 2004 study about suicide rates between the religiously affiliated and not religiously affiliated. Meaning that it doesn't cover just atheists of course, since for example christians can also not be religiously affiliated but still believe in the scriptures' teachings.

The study also fails to distinguish between having religion and simply having a social group. If we can't rule this out, the study may in fact be showing that isolated people tend to have higher suicide rates... which is something we have actually known for years. Humans are social creatures and deprived of socialization, we tend to do poorly.

The sample group this study used is also very small (only 371 people) and was taken exclusively from depressed inpatients at a psychiatric hospital. A sample group this tiny and exclusive can't say anything at all about the general population at large. It may very well be that fewer atheists even end up in a psychiatric hospital for depression in the first place... a fact corroborated by a different study. Whether or not this other study is any more accurate, I can't say, but at the very least it casts further doubt on an already dubious attempt at linking religion with reduced suicide rates.

On a side note, I'd also like to point out that atheism doesn't have a counterpoint to suicide bombers. They belong exclusively to the "religiously affiliated" set of people. This is significant because there is nothing in atheism that would ever encourage this form of martyrdom.

3. Judging others solely for their apperance is immoral and harmful. The very same thing happened to black people. If you really use the Bible as any kind of moral guide, STOP. It's not accurate, it's a disgusting compilation of books with utterly despicable bronze age teachings (sexism, homophobia, promotion of slavery, unjustified genocide, senseless discrimination and much more) that no sane person should follow today. Catholicism for that matter is also arguably one of the worst christian cults.
