Oh, man. The talent of the 1960s: Otis, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King, Ray Charles, James Brown, James Carr, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson . . . and that's just a few of the great male vocalists. All of them great. This is one of those knockout songs. I was in a store recently and heard it on the radio. I wasn't expecting to hear it, but there it was. I couldn't move until the end of it: too powerful.

Back in 1968 at the age of 17 my cousin lent me an album, “This is soul” that was the first time I had heard of this unequalled soul singer. It was Christmastime and a year since his young soul was taken from us. I soon collected most of his records, and found a new love of music, which has never left me. Motown’s Marvin Gaye, was a close second for me, but Otis was and is still a soul singer that can never be rivalled. A voice so mature at a very young age, my God, what would he have achieved if he had lived? RIP great man.

First Otis song I've ever heard was him doing the cover of "Down in the Valley", and I just sat there in shock realizing that nobody could possibly sing with more passion and vocal range than this..... blew me away. When I was in HS in the mid 90's, my little group of friends were already getting into the 60's and 70's music. We obviously listened to The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Foyd, etc (and I was a HUGE The WHO fan, The Animals). For me though, I was already getting more into the whole Mowtown scene and when I listened to Otis Redding, especially this track, I was almost in tears. I had been in a situation with I think my GF, or close to it or soemthing, and this song was almost the soundtrack of that night I mentioned. But I still cannot believe the talent and the msuic that he made an was taken from us too soon.

My mother was raised in the south, I grew up with the temptations and all the the shag / R&B etc. Mom went to segregated schools. Mom told us kids that when Otis Died , every white girl was crying, they cried at home and at school too. Watching Otis and hearing his voice all these years... The greatest voice in all of music
