The Song We Were Singing
by Paul McCartney

For a while, we could sit, smoke a pipe
And discuss all the vast intricacies of life
We could jaw through the night
Talk about a range of subjects, anything you like

Oh yeah

But we always came back to the song we were singing
At any particular time
Yeah we always came back to the song we were singing
At any particular time

Take a sip, see the world through a glass
And speculate about the cosmic solution
To the sound, blue guitars
Caught up in a philosophical discussion

Oh yeah

But we always came back to the song we were singing
At any particular time
Yeah we always came back to the song we were singing
At any particular time

For a while, we could sit, smoke a pipe
And discuss all the vast intricacies of life
Yeah, we could jaw through the night
Talk about a range of subjects, anything you like

But we always came back to the song we were singing
At any particular time
Yeah we always came back to the songswe were singing
At any particular time

Yeah, we always came back

Take a sip, see the world through a glass
And speculate about the cosmic solution
To the sound, blue guitars
Caught up in a philosophical discussion
Oh yeah

But we always came back to the songs we were singing
At any particular time
Yes we always came back to the songs we were singing
At any particular time
Yeah

We always came back
To the songs we were singing

i think this album is probably just too emotional for paul to play live. he wrote it around the time linda was dying, and if you listen to the content, its a lot of reflection and nostalgia. it's probably tough on him, but i think its one of his very best solo albums.

I never listened to it in its entirety when I bought it, but I listening to it now, I think it's a masterpiece

Astute comment. I agree with your assessment.

I love this song, my Dad used to play this in the car when my sister and I were small - we'd sing along on the chorus and had a little dance and everything! This song reminds me of sun and smiles and family :) :) :) Thank you Paul xxx

I'm crying because Paul wrote this song for John Lennon 😭💔 RIP John

@Marco Zucchi Paul  wrote the song while on vacation in Jamaica in 1995. He explained in the album's liner notes: "I was remembering the '60s; sitting around late at night, dossing, smoking pipes, drinking wine…jawing, talking about the cosmic solution. It was what we were all doing… all that, 'What about... wow!' It's that time in your life when you got a chance for all that." , so in this song he's talking about the FAB4 ❤️

I don't care the why. I take what I want to take out of it. And that is the essence of songwriting!

Marco Zucchi

No, it's about a vacation in Jamaica in the 90ies

In the book "many years from now" McCartney said that when they were teenagers that he and Lennon would spend afternoons writing songs at his father's home on 20 Fortlin Rd. Liverpool and they would also smoke from his father's pipe. That is what the reference of the pipe is about, not pot. They did smoke pot together but that was years later.
