The opening track, "Waking Up Alone", became Williams' biggest charting single as a performer. The album uses distinctive sparse production, often eschewing non-acoustic instruments altogether. The back cover bears the following statement: "There are those who listen, and those who wait to talk. This album is dedicated to the listeners."
The album is the first to include songs written entirely by Williams, among them the aforementioned single. Included on the album are Williams' renditions of "Let Me Be the One" and "We've Only Just Begun" by Carpenters, as well as the title track "An Old Fashioned Love Song" by Three Dog Night. Also found on the album is a cover of Graham Nash's "Simple Man", such covers being a rarity on Williams' albums.
