Gold Soundz
Pavement Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning

Go back to those gold sounds
And keep my advent to yourself
Because it's nothing I don't like
Is it a crisis or a boring change?
When it's central, so essential
It has a nice ring when you laugh
At their low life opinions
And they're coming to the chorus now

I keep my address to yourself
'Cause we need secrets
We need secret, 'crets, 'crets, 'crets, 'crets, 'crets
Back right now

Because I never wanna make you feel
That you're social, never ignorant soul
Believe in what you wanna do
And do you think that is a major flaw
When they rise up in the falling rain
And if you stay around
With your knuckles ground down
The trial's over, weapon's found

Keep my address to myself because it's secret
'Cause it's secret, 'cret, 'cret, 'cret
'Cret, 'cret, 'cret, 'cret, 'cret
'Cret, 'cret, 'cret, 'cret, 'cret
Back right now

So drunk in the August sun
And you're the kind of girl I like
Because you're empty and I'm empty
And you can never quarantine the past
Did you remember in December
That I won't eat you when I'm gone
And if I go there, I won't stay there
Because I'm sitting here too long

I've been sitting here too long
And I've been wasted
Advocating that word for the last word
Last words come up, all you've got to waste

Overall Meaning

The song Gold Soundz by Pavement is a melancholic reflection on the past with some playful wordplay. The line "gold soundz" can be interpreted as a metaphor representing the perfect moment or the perfect sound, which the narrator wants to revisit. The narrator implores the person that they’re speaking to, to keep their “advent” or desire to revisit these sounds to themselves. This could be because the narrator doesn’t want to appear out of touch with current trends, or because the memories hold deep personal meaning and they don’t want to risk corrupting them. The line “because it’s nothing I don’t like” is an interesting paradox because it could mean that the past moments are so perfect that the narrator doesn’t dislike anything about them, or that the moments are irrelevant and not special enough for the narrator to dislike them.

The song jumps between genres, shifting from indie rock to power pop, and even hints of punk as the chorus builds up. The line “when it’s central, so essential” has a nice ring to it because it’s part of the chorus, and it repeats with each iteration of the melody. The lyrics then go on to reference “low life opinions,” dismissing any criticism of the narrator’s preference for an earlier time. The song ends with the narrator admitting that they’ve been “sitting here too long” but still advocates for the past, wanting to preserve the most beautiful moments for as long as possible.

Pavement are THE 90s band... I don't think any other rock group better epitomizes the era. They're like what Chuck Berry was to the 50s, Ramones were to the late 70s, etc. Don't get me wrong, I love Nirvana and Sonic Youth. But I don't think anyone better soaked up the cool, nothing-to-do-so-let's-chill, blank generation vibe than Pavement.

In an era of imitation, Pavement were one of the only bands to forget a new path. I was stunned by their unique song from the moment I heard their greatest hits album "Quarantine The Past". Never heard anything like Pavement before or since.

@Jim Chabai definitely like the 90s Velvet Underground for me!

lmw_blue

Yep! Nirvana are still in the top 5 best bands of the 90s, but Pavement for me is number 1!

@Jason Allen his comment seems to be less about liking the band and more about how he feels the 90´s were. in his experience was cool and chill and fun. and pavement really captures. But when you look, most of 90´s rockers were tortured souls coping with depression and heroin addiction. To me the 90´s were darker than this, but also in a good way

Jason Allen

Why do people always feel the need to announce their favorite band “epitomizes” or is “the greatest” or is “under appreciated” etc?

For YOU they may sum up the 90s but not for others. People have different tastes and experiences.

I keep trying to give Pavement a chance but honestly the band does nothing for me. Obviously they do for a lot of people. Different strokes.
